THE MAGICAL COAT, SHOES, AND SWORD. [the following story embodies so many unnatural marvels that I cannot easily fix upon a title. It relates the adventures, however, all through, of one personage, a young prince, who ought therefore to be mentioned in the title of the story. As towns, intoxicating liquors, soldiers, and sentinels are referred to, the story must be of comparatively recent origin. But it is none the less interesting on that account. Its reference to transformations and magic, in general, seems clearly to point to an Indian origin, though the "invisible coat," " shoes of swiftness," and "sword of sharpness" look wonderfully like some fairy tale of European birth. It is as follows: ] r I "HERE was once a large town where a very rich king re .*. sided. He had so much money that a particular house was appropriated to it, which was carefully guarded by sentinels. After a time this king became intemperate, and wasted his money in rioting and drunkenness. His queen became alarmed lest he should spend the whole estate and they should be reduced to poverty. To prevent this, she gives directions to the soldiers that guarded the treasure not to allow the king to take any more. They obey her directions, and when the king applies for more money he is told that it is all gone. Thereupon he takes a turn in the fields, thinking over his situation, when a very well-dressed gentleman meets him and asks for one of his daughters in marriage. He agrees to give him his eldest daughter (he has three in all) for a large amount of money. The terms are accepted, the money paid, the girl delivered up, and taken away, nobody knows where. The king spends the money in intoxicating liquors, and keeps himself drunk as long as it lasts. He then takes...

Book Synopsis Myth, Symbol and Colonial Encounter by : Jennifer Reid
Download or read book Myth, Symbol and Colonial Encounter written by Jennifer Reid and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, people of British origin have shared the area of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island (traditionally called Acadia) with Eastern Canada's Algonkian-speaking peoples, the Mi'kmaq. Despite nearly three centuries of interaction, these communities have largely remained alienated from one another. What were the differences between Mi'kmaq and British structures of valuation? What were the consequences of Acadia's colonization for both Mi'kmaq and British people? By examining the symbolic and mythic lives of these peoples, Reid considers the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century roots of this alienation and suggests that interaction between British and Mi'kmaq during the period was substantially determined by each group's fundamental religious need to feel rooted - to feel at home in Acadia.

Book Synopsis Storm of the Sea by : Matthew R. Bahar
Download or read book Storm of the Sea written by Matthew R. Bahar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of cultural encounter in colonial North America often contrast traditional Indian coastal-dwellers and intrepid European seafarers. In Storm of the Sea, Matthew R. Bahar instead tells the forgotten history of Indian pirates hijacking European sailing ships on the rough waters of the north Atlantic and of an Indian navy pressing British seamen into its ranks. From their earliest encounters with Europeans in the sixteenth century to the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, the Wabanaki Indians of northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes fought to enhance their relationship with the ocean and the colonists it brought to their shores. This native maritime world clashed with the relentless efforts of Europeans to supplant it with one more amenable to their imperial designs. The Wabanaki fortified their longstanding dominion over the region's land- and seascape by co-opting European sailing technology and regularly plundering the waves of European ships, sailors, and cargo. Their campaign of sea and shore brought wealth, honor, and power to their confederacy while alienating colonial neighbors and thwarting English and French imperialism through devastating attacks. Their seaborne raids developed both a punitive and extractive character; they served at once as violent and honorable retribution for the destructive pressures of colonialism in Indian country and as a strategic enterprise to secure valuable plunder. Ashore, Indian diplomats engaged in shrewd transatlantic negotiations with imperial officials of French Acadia and New England. Positioning Indians into the Age of Sail, Storm of the Sea offers an original perspective on Native American, imperial, and Atlantic history.
