Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Conspiracy: Legends, David Gardner delves into the world of celebrity to investigate legendary stories that continue to fascinate and intrigue to this day. If people famously remember where they were when JFK was assassinated, many also recall where they were and what they were doing when Elvis, Princess Diana and John Lennon died. As for Marilyn Monroe, the candle flickered out long ago, but only now can the truth be told about how and why she died. After combing through thousands of recently declassified FBI files, interviewing key witnesses, crime analysts and forensic experts during years of research, investigative writer David Gardner has unearthed new information that will transform the way we look at these iconic tragedies as well as include new insights on the conspiracy theories that surround the deaths of Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain and even the Queen. For the first time, Conspiracy: Legends provides many of the answers that have been so elusive for so long, while explaining what it was about these enduring legends that made them so memorable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of African talent in European Football. In fact, a definitive list of the continent´s finest players in England´s top flight alone, for example, is extremely difficult to compile. Considering that talents such as Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Benni McCarthy, El-Hadji Diouf and Yakubu are all regularly on display week-in, week-out, African football fans have a multitude of riches to admire. Notwithstanding, Africa’s main concern must be towards capturing the coveted FIFA World Cup. THE BIG QUESTION IS: If Africa were that good in football why are they not showing it at the FIFA World Cup? So far no African team (country) has gone beyond the FIFA World Cup quarter final. Ghana and Cameroon have shown class at one time and once made it to the 8th stage though. Senegal and Nigeria have also once made it past the first 16th stage. No doubt, Africa has the football talents; let’s pray and hope her officials live up to the challenge in shaping their national team’s spirit to tangible results. Just getting to the 16th stage is not good enough for the euphoria. Africa can do better than merely showing up. I predict a great showing in South Africa 2010, at least to 8th stage, (the semi-finals) and winning in Brazil in 2014. The question then is: Which African country is ready to meet this challenge? The truth of the matter is any of the African teams is capable. This book looks at the history of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and goes on to feature Africa’s great footballers Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professional football was officially suspended at the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. With their contracts terminated, players were free to join the Armed Forces and, by April 1940, 514 were enlisted in the Army, 84 in the RAF and 31 in the Royal Navy. Many others were involved in war work; one factory in Oldbury boasted 18 West Bromwich Albion players. Of those who joined up 80 were to die. These included English International Tom Cooper who had played for Liverpool, Derby County and Port Vale, Alan Fowler of Swindon Town who died after D Day serving with the Dorsets, and Herbie Robert of Arsenal. Many were household names as Gareth Bale and Wayne Rooney are today. In this powerful and evocative memorial book the author traces the footballing and military careers of these talented men who sacrificed all for King and Country.

Book excerpt: Endeavor: ..to try to do; to set about; to owe; to be under obligation; to try hard; to exert effort; to make an earnest attempt; to strive. Endeavor begins as a story of five families related by blood, marriage, and a sixth surrogate family by love and friendship. It was the sixth family that raised an important question for the author as to how he defines family. Are they (family) only those who are related by blood, marriage, or are they friendship, legal action, or something broader associated with functions that are similar to what we normally associate with a family? Endeavor is about people, who spent their entire lives striving to achieve something better for their families, themselves, and others without depreciating the value of their work, contribution, or others with whom they shared many things, not the least of which often was unemployment, and poverty. Only one thing could overwhelm them, fear of losing hope and their belief that things would be better. It was their mantra for living. Often beaten down, they were rarely overwhelmed. The story begins with the Smiths, peasants living in the Ruhr Valley early in the 19th Century where they labored in the coalmines and on their own small patch of land carved from the dark forest, which was their first step up the ladder of achievement. In those days work was communal, as was most of life's other requirements. The opening chapter is followed by the story of the Dungans, beginning in the early 1850s. They were dirt poor Irish, who traded a potato famine, starvation, and poverty, for a little land, in a new world, Kentucky. Both stories will take the reader to the Great Depression of the 1930s that shaped an American culture for two generations. The third chapter will introduces the Williams, Old, and Goss families, a treasure of Cornish cousins who formed tight family units for many generations, and who generously included my wife and myself to their group when I married into the Williams family. The Lows, our adopted family are introduced in the sixth chapter, Families at War. From there on, we leave it to the reader to sort out a remarkable collection of people who became the source of our human fire: ..When we were alone with the wind crying Offered us the warmth of a human fire. (Partial quote from Many Winters, by Nancy Wood)

Book excerpt: In this pioneering work of cultural history, historian Anthony Harkins argues that the hillbilly-in his various guises of "briar hopper," "brush ape," "ridge runner," and "white trash"-has been viewed by mainstream Americans simultaneously as a violent degenerate who threatens the modern order and as a keeper of traditional values of family, home, and physical production, and thus symbolic of a nostalgic past free of the problems of contemporary life. "Hillbilly" signifies both rugged individualism and stubborn backwardness, strong family and kin networks but also inbreeding and bloody feuds. Spanning film, literature, and the entire expanse of American popular culture, from D. W. Griffith to hillbilly music to the Internet, Harkins illustrates how the image of the hillbilly has consistently served as both a marker of social derision and regional pride. He traces the corresponding changes in representations of the hillbilly from late-nineteenth century America, through the great Depression, the mass migrations of Southern Appalachians in the 1940s and 1950s, the War on Poverty in the mid 1960s, and to the present day. Harkins also argues that images of hillbillies have played a critical role in the construction of whiteness and modernity in twentieth century America. Richly illustrated with dozens of photographs, drawings, and film and television stills, this unique book stands as a testament to the enduring place of the hillbilly in the American imagination. Hillbilly received an Honorable Mention, John G. Cawelti Book Award of the American Culture Association.
