Book Synopsis Textile Legend Unravels by : Dr. Rajaram Jaipuria
Download or read book Textile Legend Unravels written by Dr. Rajaram Jaipuria and published by Jaipuria Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of my life essentially focuses on how politics destroyed an assiduously built industrial empire; how I fought a long but unsuccessful legal battle for getting my textile mills back; and how I eventually succeeded in reinventing life in the very industry I always loved. The origin of the House of Jaipurias dates back to 1914, when my father, Seth Mungturamji Jaipuria, left our native town of Nawalgarh (in Rajasthan) to travel to Kolkata (earlier Calcutta), which was then India’s industrial and commercial hub, and had been its official capital till 1911. (Delhi then acquired that privilege.) I have tried to explain the evolution of the Jaipuria Group, as well as of the Indian textile industry, in as lucid a manner as I could. I hope the young entrepreneurs, as well as the students of management, apart from the public at large, would find my narrative educative and, if I may say so, inspiring. I hope this book would not only help the younger generation understand India’s industrial history and the roots of its own entrepreneurial abilities but would also inspire some of the few remaining entrepreneurs of my generation to record their life histories and share their rich experience, besides warning present and future governments about the dangers of unnecessary meddling in affairs of industry and trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My struggle for the downtrodden and life objective of providing healthcare delivery to rural Gambia was reinforced by ideas I picked up while a student in Michigan but above for my love and commitment to my fellow villagers. A drowning person swims franticly towards any floating object to cling on it in hope of saving his or her dear precious life. It is form of triumph sane person yearns. We are elated on overcoming be it our fears, failures or a seemingly unsolvable state of difficulty. This work is combination and outcome based up on triumph embellished with angelic hope of bringing health care relief to rural Gambia. It is strong conviction that when one committed to the greater good through hard work hope will be given to intended receivers. Hence, this work is about way a simple but penniless village boy fought against the odds and mountains of inhuman laws at many crossroads of his life. It portrays struggle to be above treacherous waves while clamouring to bring rewarding healthcare service to villagers in the North Bank of the Gambia. Being most of the time jobless and penniless made it all look like an Alice in wonderland fairy tale adventure. The turbulent waves commenced in 1953 when I made up my mind to become part of the solution to rural Gambia’s health service delivery shortage. Even though young I was fully aware that no one could serve our people better other than us indigenous Gambians. This belief propelled me into similar trip or experience Sinbad the sailor or Marco Polo went through. Most of the trials and tribulation I encountered have already been revealed in previous works of mine. Brace yourself and take heart to read about this life before you. This work relates to my eventual graduating from medical school, then returning to the Gambia and working as Medical Officer at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH), Banjul and finally establishing NGO: Manding Medical Centre, a village self-help health organisation that provide much needed quality medical services at Njawara North Bank Division of the Gambia, West Africa. Finally this work hopes to inspire, give hope and encouragement to youngsters about how not to give up on life and urge them stay buoyed to face challenges life throws at us in this sojourn. Please allow me express profound gratitude to the numerous friends who were persistent in encouraging me Publish this epic stories.

Book Synopsis Language and Ideology by : René Dirven
Download or read book Language and Ideology written by René Dirven and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with its sister volume on Theoretical Cognitive Approaches, this volume explores the contribution which cognitive linguistics can make to the identification and analysis of overt and hidden ideologies. This volume shows that descriptive tools which cognitive linguistics developed for the analysis of language-in-use are highly efficient for the analysis of ideologies as well. Amongst them are the concept of grounding and the speaker’s deictic centre, iconographic reference, frames, cultural cognitive models as a subgroup of Idealized Cognitive Models, conceptual metaphors, root metaphors, frames as groups of metaphors, mental spaces, and conceptual blending. The first section ‘Political metaphor and ideology’ discusses topics such as Nazi Germany, discrimination of Afro-Americans, South Africa’s “rainbow nation”, and the impeachment campaign against President Clinton. The second section, on cross-cultural “Otherness” deals with cultural clashes such as those between the Basque symbolic world and the general European value systems; between the Islam and the West, determining its treatment of Iraq in the Gulf War; and between Hong Kong “Otherness” and centuries of Western dominance. The third section deals with ‘Metaphors for institutional ideologies’ and concentrates on the globalisation of the North and South American markets, on insults in (un)parliamentary debates, and on the Internet being for sale.

Book Synopsis Orson Welles's Last Movie by : Josh Karp
Download or read book Orson Welles's Last Movie written by Josh Karp and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Josh Karp shines a spotlight on the making of The Other Side of the Wind—the final unfinished film from the auteur of Citizen Kane in Orson Welles’s Last Movie, the basis of Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville’s Netflix Original Documentary, They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead. In the summer of 1970, legendary but self-destructive director Orson Welles returned to Hollywood from years of self-imposed exile in Europe and decided it was time to make a comeback movie. Coincidentally, it was the story of a legendary self-destructive director who returns to Hollywood from years of self-imposed exile in Europe. Welles swore it wasn’t autobiographical. The Other Side of the Wind was supposed to take place during a single day, and Welles planned to shoot it in eight weeks. It took six years during his lifetime—only to be finally completed more than thirty years after his death by The Last Picture Show director Peter Bogdanovich, who narrates the film, and released by Netflix. Orson Welles’s Last Movie is a fast-paced, behind-the-scenes account of the bizarre, hilarious, and remarkable making of what has been called “the greatest home movie that no one has ever seen.” Funded by the shah of Iran’s brother-in-law, and based on a script that Welles rewrote every night for years, the film was a final attempt to one-up his own best work. It’s a production best encompassed by its star—the celebrated director of The Maltese Falcon, John Huston—who described the making of the film as “an adventure shared by desperate men that finally came to nothing.”

Book Synopsis Exiled In Paradise: German Refugee Artists and Intellectuals in America from the 1930s to the Present by : Anthony Heilbut
Download or read book Exiled In Paradise: German Refugee Artists and Intellectuals in America from the 1930s to the Present written by Anthony Heilbut and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of émigré intellectuals, writers, artists, scientists, movie directors, and scholars — including Bertolt Brecht, Theodor Adorno, Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Thomas Mann, Arnold Schoenberg, George Grosz, Erik Erikson, Billy Wilder and Fritz Lang — who fled Nazi Germany and changed America. Heilbut provides a vivid narrative of how they viewed their new country and how America reacted to their arrival as the atom bomb was being developed, the Cold War and McCarthyism were underway, and Hollywood dominated moviemaking. “The son of Jewish immigrants who fled Germany, Anthony Heilbut grew up in New York. Exiled in Paradise, a social history he wrote more than 35 years ago, is still the most immersive account of the German-speaking exiles who came to this country between 1933 and 1941 and of their outsize influence on the culture they found here... Mr. Heilbut provides an absorbingly detailed chronicle of some of these immigrant lives — among them Theodor Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Thomas Mann, Billy Wilder and Cold War physicists.” — Donna Rifkind, The Wall Street Journal “Still the best book on the topic” — Phillip Lopate, The New York Times Book Review “Insightful ... valuable and stimulating ... For some readers, especially the children of generations of émigrés, the book will provide a background to their most basic intellectual assumptions.” — Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, The New York Times “From one page to the next, the book transcends its stated purpose of providing a link between the history of the German-Jewish immigrants and their staggering cultural achievements to acquire the dimensions of that mysterious reality which even a Bresson cannot hope to define: a work of art.” — Marcel Ophuls, American Film Magazine “The story of these refugees has finally found its singular and single voice; it is that of Anthony Heilbut, himself the son of exiles ... His book turns into something more than a panorama about foreigners. It is a way of revealing to Americans themselves what their country really is like.” — Ariel Dorfman, The Washington Post “Anthony Heilbut has exercised impressive scholarship, and even a touch of poetry, to get to the heart of this diaspora.” — Time
