Book excerpt: For more than a century Blue Funnel ships, managed from Liverpool by Alfred Holt and Company, held a unique place in Britain's shipping industry. Starting as pioneers of cargo liners between Liverpool and the Far East in 1866, the Company maintained a fine reputation built on its vessels, crews, shore staff, and management. This book traces the origins and evolution of the Line, charting its history through both world wars, its experiences in the great depression of the 1930s, and its vigorous response to the challenge of containerisation in the 1960s. Integrated into the text are discussions of the current roles of agencies and conferences, the singular management structure, and assessments of the parts played by key individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Atlantis may, in the light of our present knowledge of Plato 's sunken island, appear as a somewhat presumptuous title for a work, the object of which is to present a general outline of what is known concerning Atlantean civilisation. Yet the author placed this study upon a scientific basis, and in so doing he has attached the description of "history" to this work in the hope that the mere invocation of such a name will endow it with the spirit which should inspire all histories a desire to arrive at fundamental truth by every available means. Contents: Preface Introductory The Sources Of Atlantean History I: The Writings Of Plato The Sources Of Atlantean History Ii: From The Fourth Century B.C. Atlantean Historical Sources Examined The Geography Of Atlantis The Races Of Atlantis The Stone Age In Atlantis The Kings Of Atlantis Atlantis In Britain The Traditions Of Atlantis Life In Atlantis The Atlantean State And Polity The Religion Of Atlantis Animal Life In Atlantis The Colonies Of Atlantis The Atlantean Culture Complex

Download or read book Our Own Time written by David R. Roediger and published by Verso. This book was released on 1989-11-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Own Time retells the story of American labor by focusing on the politics of time and the movements for a shorter working day. It argues that the length of the working day has been the central issue for the American labor movement during its most vigorous periods of activity, uniting workers along lines of craft, gender and ethnicity. The authors hold that the workweek is likely again to take on increased significance as workers face the choice between a society based on free time and one based on alienated work and unemployment.

Download or read book Going to the People written by Chang-tai Hung and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is generally believed that Mao Zedong’s populism was an abrupt departure from traditional Chinese thought. This study demonstrates that many of its key concepts had been developed several decades earlier by young May Fourth intellectuals, including Liu Fu, Zhou Zuoren, and Gu Jiegang. The Chinese folk-literature movement, begun at National Beijing University in 1918, changed the attitudes of Chinese intellectuals toward literature and toward the common people. Turning their backs on “high culture” and Confucianism, young folklorists began “going to the people,” particularly peasants, to gather the songs, legends, children’s stories, and proverbs that Chang-tai Hung here describes and analyzes. Their focus on rural culture, rural people, and rural problems was later to be expanded by the Chinese Communist revolutionaries."
