Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of otherness, often misused, requires important conceptualization work in order for it to be considered in all of its forms, and not simply reduced to the account of others. Although otherness certainly questions the link to the other (relation), it also questions the link to the self (reflexivity) and the link to knowledge (epistemology). Being tridimensional, the process of otherness is a paradox, the meaning of which can only be drawn thanks to ethics, psychoanalytical orientation and the history of philosophical ideas. This book, which relates to philosophy of education, seeks to explain the problematic notion of otherness, the desire for which is specific to humankind. It examines how otherness questions the limits of knowledge, transmission and language, and argues that it is in fact a value, a tool and practice for all the actors involved in the relationship between education, knowledge and care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ambition of this two-volume publication is to illustrate the applicability of social pedagogy - as an academic and professional paradigm - to work with the most diverse target populations. It is launched at a moment when important and highly interesting developments can be observed in the United Kingdom: a country without a traditional social pedagogy model has started importing social pedagogy from countries with a social pedagogy tradition. Social Pedagogy for the Entire Lifespan illustrates how social pedagogy - as a model in theory and practice - has been and is currently being used, around and across Europe, for work with people of all age groups. Volume I is dedicated to the theory and history of social pedagogy, as well as to practice with children and young people. Chapters cover Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway and Spain. Volume II will include chapters on practice with adults and seniors, as well as chapters on further perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does professional education for future social workers and social pedagogues in one country compare with other countries? What happened in Germany, Denmark and French-speaking Belgium during the years 1989-2004, starting with the year when an EU Directive laid down common rules for the mutual recognition of higher education qualifications? And which lessons may English and British academics, policy-makers, employers and unionists draw from this European material? Are social work and social pedagogy bound to converge as they did in Germany? Or are there Alternatives to Convergence? Did professional education in the countries examined show signs of Europeanisation? These are some of the questions which readers will be able to explore in this book.\pAfter working in the European Commission (Sport Unit) (2001-14) Jacob Kornbeck recently joined the Secretariat of the European Data Protection Supervisor (Policy and Consultation Unit). His part-time research interests cover a range of policy areas, often involving transnational comparisons. Apart from social work and social pedagogy he has written and lectured on various aspects of sports policy, in particular anti-doping and athletes' rights, as well as health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA). Jacob holds degrees from German and British universities. This book is the slightly reworked text of his doctoral thesis (University of London). Following Inspiration from Brussels: the European Union and Sport (published by EHV Academic Press in 2013), this is his second book.\p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about helping troubled young people who are searching separately for security, identity, and purpose in their lives. Childhood and adolescence are pivotal stages in the quest to belong, to become somebody, and to be worth something. Children need stimulation, affection, and guidance in order to develop their potentials, but many are reared in environments that deprive them of these nutriments. Adolescents approach the threshold of independence with only the experiences gained from childhood; many lack the support of significant actions. Those who encounter difficulty in navigating through these turbulent years are to be identified by society as troubled or troublesome. These children and youth present challenges that do not yield to simple panaceas. Although no simple approach holds all the answers, bridging various concepts of education and treatment offers the best opportunity for creating positive changes. The authors refer to this process as “re-education” with full awareness that this term has been used in a variety of philosophical contexts including behavioral, ecological, and psychodynamic views.

Book excerpt: Maroon Cosmopolitics: Personhood, Creativity and Incorporation sheds further light on the contemporary modes of Maroon circulation and presence in Suriname and in the French Guiana. The contributors assembled in the volume look to describe Maroon ways of inhabiting, transforming and circulating through different localities in the Guianas, as well as their modes of creating and incorporating knowledge and artefacts into their social relations and spaces. By bringing together authors with diverse perspectives on the situation of the Guianese Maroon at the twenty-first century, the volume contributes to the anthropological literature on Maroon societies, providing ethnographic, and historical depth and legitimacy to the contemporary lives of the descendants of those who fled from slavery in the Americas.

Book excerpt: Today autism has become highly visible. Once you begin to look for it, you realize it is everywhere. Why? We all know the answer or think we do: there is an autism epidemic. And if it is an epidemic, then we know what must be done: lots of money must be thrown at it, detection centers must be established and explanations sought, so that the number of new cases can be brought down and the epidemic brought under control. But can it really be so simple? This major new book offers a very different interpretation. The authors argue that the recent rise in autism should be understood an “aftershock” of the real earthquake, which was the deinstitutionalization of mental retardation in the mid-1970s. This entailed a radical transformation not only of the institutional matrix for dealing with developmental disorders of childhood, but also of the cultural lens through which we view them. It opened up a space for viewing and treating childhood disorders as neither mental illness nor mental retardation, neither curable nor incurable, but somewhere in-between. The authors show that where deinstitutionalization went the furthest, as in Scandinavia, UK and the “blue” states of the US, autism rates are also highest. Where it was absent or delayed, as in France, autism rates are low. Combining a historical narrative with international comparison, The Autism Matrix offers a fresh and powerful analysis of a condition that affects many parents and children today.

Public enquiries and court cases concerning institutional abuse in a range of settings have generated considerable media interest and have highlighted the need for preventative strategies and appropriate responses. Four areas of abuse are covered: *the abuse of children *the abuse of adults with mental health problems *the abuse of adults with learning difficulties *the abuse of older people. Each section includes a chapter which reports on users' experiences of abuse and their views as to how institutional abuse can be prevented and survivors' needs met.
