Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows the story of the Second French Republic from its idealistic beginnings in February 1848 to its formal replacement in December 1852 by the Second Empire. Based on original archival research, The Second French Republic gives a detailed account of the internal tensions that irrevocably weakened France’s shortest republic. During this short period French political life was buffeted by strong and often contrary forces: universal manhood suffrage, fear of socialism, the President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, and the political ambitions of the military high command for the restoration of the monarchy.

Book excerpt: While careful attention has been paid to the overthrow of the July Monarchy and to the subsequent development of radicalism under the Second Republic, little research has been done on the counterrevolutionary activity that preceded Louis Napoleon's seizure of power. Thomas Forstenzer revises the standard and current interpretations of social and political repression in France from 1848 to 1851. Originally published in 1981. Book excerpt: General Louis Eugene Cavaignac has been a symbol of reactionary violence ever since he crushed the insurgent workers of Paris in the "bloody June Days" of 1848. Professor de Luna presents a fresh interpretation of the General, as well as a detailed examination of the turbulent year of European revolution, until Cavaignac was defeated by Louis Bonaparte in the December presidential elections. Many historians have dismissed the Cavaignac period as one of bleak reaction, but Professor de Luna shows that the General was a fervent democratic republican, and that the moderate republicans under Cavaignac offered their own program of political, economic, and educational reform. He was notable for developing the important economic concept of opportunity cost, and for penning the influential Parable of the Broken Window. Bastiat was born in Bayonne, Aquitaine, a port town in the south of France on the Bay of Biscay, on 30 June 1801. His father, Pierre Bastiat, was a prominent businessman in the town. His mother died in 1808 when Frederic was seven years old. His father moved inland to the town of Mugron with Frederic following soon after. Book excerpt: Focusing on the efforts of nine European intellectuals, including Tocqueville, Flaubert and Marx, to make sense of 1848, Jonathan Beecher casts a fresh and engaging perspective on the experience and impact of the Revolution, and on why, within two generations, a democratic revolution had twice culminated in the dictatorship of a Napoleon.
