Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures to Professing Christians I said that these two extremes, that which makes relig ion to consist altogether m Outward works and that which makes it consist altogether in faith, are equally false and equally fatal. Those who make religion consist altogethei' in good works, overlook the fact that works themselves are not acceptable to God unless they proceed from faith. For without faith it is impossible to please him. And those who make, religion consist altogether in faith, overlook the fact that true faith always works by love, and invariably produces the works of love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missouri Christian Lectures: Selected From the Courses of 1886, 1887, and 1888 The Executive Committee of the Missouri Christian Lectureship takes pleasure in presenting to the public another volume, containing, it is believed, an unusually valuable and timely collection of addresses. Some of them were thought out on Missouri soil, some of them were not; but all of them were delivered under the auspices of the Lectureship, and during its annual meetings. The several authors desire to be known simply as Disciples of Christ, or Christians. Acknowledging no other Master than Christ, and having no other creed or test of fellowship than faith in Christ and obedience to Him, they felt constrained during the preparation of these lectures to exercise their full measure of Christian liberty, and that too in the full expectation and desire that their reviewers should exercise the same privilege. The Committee regrets its inability to publish all the scholarly reviews and thoughtful discussions that followed their delivery. Most of them being oral, and called forth by the inspiration of the hour, could not, of course, be reproduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Truths Lectures My aim in publishing this book has been to furnish our young Catholics with a manual which will be useful to them in meeting the vital questions of the day in a manner suited f?) parry the attacks against the faith. The only merit I may claim for it is that I have striven to be very exact in all my quotations, having, as far as memory serves me, verified them all in the best editionsbefore using them, where that was possible. Certainly, no one need feel himself in any danger of going astray in trusting the citations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. And there are two classes of hypocrites that occupy these two extremes. The first class make religion consist altogether in the belief of certain abstract doctrines, or what they call faith, and lay little or no stress on good works. The other class make religion to consist altogether in good works, (I mean dead works,) and lay little or no stress on faith in Jesus Christ, but hope for salvation by their own deeds. The Jews belonged generally to the last mentioned class. Their religious teachers taught them that they would be saved by obedience to the ceremonial law. And therefore, when Paul began to preach, he seems to have attacked more especially this error of the Jews. He was determined to carry the main question, that men are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, in opposition to the doctrine of the Scribes and Pharisees, that salvation is by obedience to law. And he pressed this point so earnestly, in his preaching and in his epistles, that he carried it, and settled the faith of the church in the great doctrine of justification by faith. And then certain individuals in the church laid hold of this doctrine and carried it to the opposite extreme, and maintained that men are saved by faith altogether, irrespective of works of any kind. They overlooked the plain principle, that genuine faith always results in good works, and is itself a good work. -Charles G. Finney GET MORE BOOKS AT REVIVALPRESS.NET

On the Russell Foundation, Easter Week, 1922 Christ, who inspires and enables men to live and labor for his Kingdom. In so comprehensive a survey of Pagan and Chris tian ways of salvation, few men would attempt to base all their conclusions on original sources. I, at least, profess to have made use, in a number of the chapters, of the most recent and trustworthy authorities. In the footnotes I have mentioned the names of some of the authors whose books and articles I have consulted. I desire especially to call the attention of the reader to Professor Kilpatrick's articles in Hastings' Encyclo pedia of Religion and Ethics, on Salvation (chris tian and on Soteriology, respectively, these are'of unusual excellence and were most helpful to me in the preparation of Chapter III. As a rule, where I quote from German books, I am responsible for the English translation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Education in America: A Lecture Brethren: Your hearts are filled with joy today because years Of faithful and generous labor have at last been crowned by the dedication of this beautiful church* to the service of Almighty God. But in your joy I am sure you do not lose sight of the fact that during those years of endeavor and of hope our dear Lord and His adoring flock found welcome and fitting shelter in the hall of the parish school-house. Your prudent and zealous pastor, knowing well that the child is father of the man, and that the way to make a parish Of good Christians is to see to the Christian training Of the children, erected the school-house before laying a stone of the church he invited Our Lord and the people Of the parish to be for awhile the guests Of the children; and it is only after having for years blessed with His Real Presence that home of Christian education that our Divine Saviour has come to occupy this His beautiful dwelling place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Doctrines of Christianity, in Controversy Between Unitarians and Other Denominations of Christians: Delivered in the First Independent Church of Baltimore In commencing, then, a course of Lectures on Chris' tian Doctrine, I cannot do amiss when I attempt to lay, as he did, the foundation of religion in the Unity of God. But on the very threshold of our inquiries we meet a difficulty, we encounter what seems to us an Opposite doctrine, that God is three persons. Before we make any progress, then, we must examine this doc trine. To this subject, therefore, our first three lec tures will be devoted. And While we discuss the doc trine of the Trinity, let nothing which may be said be construed into disrespect, either for the understanding or the integrity of those who hold it. It is a doctrine for which the present generation are not. Responsible. It has been handed down to them by their fathers, With the venerable associations of antiquity; it is interwoven with literature and devotion, and thus has a sacredness in their eyes which takes the place of evidence, and almost precludes calm and dispassionate investigation. The duty of theepresent age is inquiry. Truth is par amount both to authority and sacred association. Our first allegiance is due to Truth. I invite all, then, to the discharge of a duty, when I' invite them to follow me in this discussion. If they adopt my conclusions, in justice to their understandings I should hope it will not be on insufficient ground. If they fail to do so, they will at least exchange a faith derived from tradi tion for one founded on evidence. In the course of these Lectures I shall frequently quote from the Confession of Faith of the divines at Westminster, and from the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England 3 not from any unkindness towards those who profess these creeds, or with a de sign to hold them up to odium or derision, but merely because they contain the most formal and authentic statement of the doctrines I shall discuss, and because they are the public and acknowledged standards of large and respectable bodies of the Christian church. The Levering Lectures Before the Johns Hopkins University, 1899 The sower went forth to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden under foot, and the birds of the heaven devoured it. And other fell on the rock; and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And other fell amidst the thorns; and the thorns grew with it, and choked it. And other fell into the good ground, and grew, and brought forth fruit a hundredfold. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed upon the earth; and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he knoweth not how. The earth beareth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, theft the full corn in the ear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Law and the Gospel Gospel of the Blessed God, stated in simplicity and clear ness, in perfect accordance with the instructions of the Holy Scripture, and the Liturgy, Articles, and Homilies of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He humbly trusts that the Glorious Jesus whom he worships as his Lord and his God, -his Great God and Saviour, - will be still pleased to use this work for the manifestation of his glory, the bringing of the vessels of his mercy to an acknowledgment and obedience of the truth, and the guarding of his Church against the vital and dangerous errors which these days have again brought forth, all of which, the author believes, originate in an ignorance, or in confused views, of the relations of the Law and the Gospel to each other and to man. He has also in prepa ration, should his life be spared for their publication, two other works in connection with this; the one under the title of Christ is all, displaying these precious truths in the actual experience of mam - and the other under the title of The good Confession, exhibiting the outward manifestation of their influence and Operation in the Chris tian life. He humbly hopes, and for this end, begs the prayers of Christian friends, that the Glorious King of Zion will graciously accept his efforts in these books to proclaim the truth, to the promotion of his own glory, and the edifying of his Church. And committing his labours to Him, he would adore and glorify God, the Father, the Son, and the Holv Ghost, one Almighty, Gracious God, with thanksgivings and praise, for evermore. Amen.
