And there are two classes of hypocrites that occupy these two extremes. The first class make religion consist altogether in the belief of certain abstract doctrines, or what they call faith, and lay little or no stress on good works. The other class make religion to consist altogether in good works, (I mean dead works,) and lay little or no stress on faith in Jesus Christ, but hope for salvation by their own deeds. The Jews belonged generally to the last mentioned class. Their religious teachers taught them that they would be saved by obedience to the ceremonial law. And therefore, when Paul began to preach, he seems to have attacked more especially this error of the Jews. He was determined to carry the main question, that men are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, in opposition to the doctrine of the Scribes and Pharisees, that salvation is by obedience to law. And he pressed this point so earnestly, in his preaching and in his epistles, that he carried it, and settled the faith of the church in the great doctrine of justification by faith. And then certain individuals in the church laid hold of this doctrine and carried it to the opposite extreme, and maintained that men are saved by faith altogether, irrespective of works of any kind. They overlooked the plain principle, that genuine faith always results in good works, and is itself a good work. -Charles G. Finney GET MORE BOOKS AT REVIVALPRESS.NET

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures to Professing Christians I said that these two extremes, that which makes relig ion to consist altogether m Outward works and that which makes it consist altogether in faith, are equally false and equally fatal. Those who make religion consist altogethei' in good works, overlook the fact that works themselves are not acceptable to God unless they proceed from faith. For without faith it is impossible to please him. And those who make, religion consist altogether in faith, overlook the fact that true faith always works by love, and invariably produces the works of love. Book excerpt: Phillips Brooks, a veteran minister with years of experience at the pulpit, shares guidance on preaching and serving in the ministry in these lectures delivered at Yale University. The nineteenth century was a time of great expansion in the United States, and by extension the churches and Christian movements. Demand for new preachers and ministers burgeoned, that the many new communities founded had God in the hearts and minds of their inhabitants. Having lived in what was an environment of upheaval, Brooks felt it appropriate to pass on the wisdom and advice to prospective new ministers looking to found or join parishes around the country. Making and delivering fine sermons, the messages of which stay with the congregation, is at the heart of what a good minister does. Yet the work is not confined to merely this; the preacher must be a support to the communal and spiritual life of his locality, that his congregation be kept in good health, and that their souls be shepherded toward a life of virtue and good conduct. The preacher must also turn his attention inward: his character must be examined for flaws or bad habits, with virtues cultivated, that he stand as a model for the wider community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though best remembered as the most popular preacher of the Victorian era, C. H. Spurgeon was also founder and president of the Pastors College in London. He supervised the training of over 800 students, presided at an annual conference for ministers, and, on Friday afternoons, delivered regular lectures on every aspect of pulpit ministry. Featuring such gems as "The Ministers Fainting Fits" "Posture, Action, Gesture, etc." and "On the Choice of a Text," this unabridged edition of 28 of Spurgeon’s classroom discourses on homiletics overflows with practical wisdom, discerning wit, and sage advice. Covering the call, open-air preaching, ordinary conversations, using illustrations, and conduct outside the church, Spurgeon’s words are as rich and nourishing for pastors and students today as they were more than a century ago. CHAPTERS INCLUDE The Ministers Self-Watch Our Public Prayer On Spiritualizing The Blind Eye and the Deaf Ear On Conversion as Our Aim The Sciences as Sources of Illustration
