Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Comparative Anatomy of the Placenta: First Series; Delivered Before the Royal College of Surgeons of England, June, 1875 These Lectures on the Comparative Anatomy of the Placenta were delivered in the Theatre of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, on the 14th, 15th and 16th June, 1875. They were illustrated by numerous preparations both macroscopic and microscopic, and by many enlarged coloured diagrams. The diagrams were enlarged from the preparations by my assistant Mr A. H. Young. The figures from the microscopic preparations, which are here reproduced on wood, are from drawings kindly made by that gentleman; whilst the figures in the lithographic plates are, with two exceptions, from drawings executed by my former assistant Mr J. C. Ewart, M. B., to illustrate my Memoir on the Placentation of the Seals in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The observations on the Placentae of the Narwhal, the Lemurs, the Hyrax, and the Elephant, on the chorion of the Giraffe, and on the post partum condition of the mucous membrane of the Cat's uterus, have been made since the Lectures were delivered. In a second series of Lectures to be given in the summer of 1876, it is intended to describe the Anatomy of this Organ in the other orders of Mammals.
