Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These six lectures on the Christian sacraments were delivered in Jerusalem in the fourth century. This was a time of rapid transition for the Church. Until AD 313, Christianity had been an illegal & persecuted religion, but under Constantine & his successors it became the favored religion of the state. Potential converts thronged the shining new basilicas, built through the beneficence of the emperors. Catechetical instruction was needed. And it was provided by gifted preachers & teachers like St Cyril of Jerusalem. The first of these lectures, the Procatechesis, is a hearty welcome to the candidates for baptism and introduces them to the periods of doctrinal instruction that lie ahead. The remaining five, the Mystagogical Catecheses, are an exposition of the rites of Christian initiation--baptism, chrismation, & the Eucharist--for the newly baptized. A rich source on the history and worship of the fourth century, these lectures remain instructive & inspirational. This volume--featuring the Greek text and a new English translation by Maxwell E. Johnson, a prominent scholar of the early liturgy--will become the standard text for years to come."--! From back cover.

Book Synopsis Liturgical Catechesis in the 21st Century by : James C. Pauley
Download or read book Liturgical Catechesis in the 21st Century written by James C. Pauley and published by Liturgy Training Publications. This book was released on 2022-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Liturgical Catechesis in the 21st Century: A School of Discipleship, Dr. James Pauley explores the sacred action most essential to forming genuine disciples: the transformative encounter with God in the liturgy.
Drawing upon important twentieth-century intellectual influences as well as the experience of several of today’s foremost catechetical leaders, this book will inspire readers with a promising new vision for sacramental preparation and mystagogical catechesis, one that places maximum emphasis on apprenticing people into an active and fruitful sacramental life in Christ. Dr. James Pauley stresses the importance of discipleship and apprenticeship, leading from the visible to the invisible realities of the divine encounter with God in the sacraments. The relationship of liturgy and catechesis is vitally important to full, conscious and active liturgical participation, and to the life of holiness and missionary responsiveness which depends upon liturgy as its source. This revised edition has been updated to reflect the 2020 Directory for Catechesis.

Download or read book Pseudo-Dionysius written by Paul Rorem and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-02-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dionysius the Areopagite" is the biblical name chosen by the pseudonymous author of an influential body of Christian theological texts, dating from around 500 C.E. The Celestial Hierarchy, The Ecclesiastical Hierarchy, The Divine Names, and The Mystical Theology offer a synthesis of biblical interpretation, liturgical spirituality, and Neoplatonic philosophy. Their central motif, which has made them the charter of Christian mysticism, is the upward progress of the soul toward God through the spiritual interpretation of the Bible and the liturgy. Dionysius continually reminds his readers, however, that all human concepts fall short of the transcendence of God and must therefore be abandoned in negotiations and silence. In this book, Rorem provides a commentary on all of the Dionysian writings, chapter by chapter, and examines especially their complex inner coherence. The Dionysian influence on medieval theology is introduced in essays on specific topics: hierarchy, biblical symbolism, angels, Gothic architecture, liturgical allegory, the scholastic doctrine of God, and the mystical theology of the western Middle Ages. Rorem's book makes these texts more accessible to both scholars and students and includes a comprehensive bibliography of secondary sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the last five Mystagogical Catechisms which are a unit and constitute the pinnacle of St. Cyrils lessons to the newly illumined Christians. They have a special importance for all Christians and can become the starting point for rekindling our love and dedication to the leader of perfector of our faith, our Lord and God Jesus Christ. St. Cyril reminds us in these Catechisms a) that as baptized Christians we are committed to be dead to ourselves and to the world, b) that as chrismated with the holy Myrrh we have received the Holy Spirit, to Whom we must fully entrust ourselves, and c) that when we attend the Divine Liturgy, we must prepare ourselves and partake of the immaculate sacraments of the Body and Blood of Christ. This is the rule of the Orthodox Christian, the way of Salvation.
Book Synopsis Living the Catechism of the Catholic Church by : Christoph Schoenborn
Download or read book Living the Catechism of the Catholic Church written by Christoph Schoenborn and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the editor of the monumental Catechism of the Catholic Church, a worldwide best seller, provides a brief and profound commentary on the second part of the Catechism, the sacraments. Schönborn gives an incisive, detailed analysis of the sacraments, providing a specific meditation for each week of the year on how to better live the Catholic faith with the aid of the sacraments and the Mass, and explained in the Catechism. Through these 52 meditations, Schönborn's hope is for the reader to not just have a better grasp of the Catholic doctrine and belief, but especially to grow in a greater love of and devotion to the person of Jesus Christ. "Faith is a whole. It has only one heart, one center, Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. Christ must therefore also be the center of catechesis whose object is 'putting people...in communion...with Jesus Christ; only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit". -Cardinal Christoph Schönborn
