Book Synopsis New Histories of South Africa's Apartheid-Era Bantustans by : Shireen Ally
Download or read book New Histories of South Africa's Apartheid-Era Bantustans written by Shireen Ally and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bantustans – or ‘homelands’ – were created by South Africa’s apartheid regime as ethnically-defined territories for Africans. Granted self-governing and ‘independent’ status by Pretoria, they aimed to deflect the demands for full political representation by black South Africans and were shunned by the anti-apartheid movement. In 1972, Steve Biko wrote that ‘politically, the bantustans are the greatest single fraud ever invented by white politicians’. With the end of apartheid and the first democratic elections of 1994, the bantustans formally ceased to exist, but their legacies remain inscribed in South Africa’s contemporary social, cultural, political, and economic landscape. While the older literature on the bantustans has tended to focus on their repressive role and political illegitimacy, this edited volume offers new approaches to the histories and afterlives of the former bantustans in South Africa by a new generation of scholars. This book was originally published as various special issues of the South African Historical Journal.

Book Synopsis Southern Africa Since The Portuguese Coup by : John Seiler
Download or read book Southern Africa Since The Portuguese Coup written by John Seiler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980. Toward the end of 1975 the author decided to edit a collection of essays on political developments in Southern Africa. Regional events since the Portuguese coup in April 1974 had already made an enormous impact, first suggesting the possibilities of peaceful accommodation between South Africa and its neighbors, but then demonstrating the destructive impact in Angola of widespread international intervention (in the latter half of 1975). From 1975 to the present, events in Southern Africa have neared center stage in international attention, but, as these essays will show, outstanding regional differences are no closer to peaceful resolution in late 1979 than they were in early 1976.

Geyser and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes contain a guide to archives and an extensive bibliography on South African and Namibian history, with special emphasis on political history in the 20th century. The register of document collections (vol. 1) gives the contents ofprivate collections of several administrators and colonial politicians involved in Namibian affairs, and there are separate chapters on Namibia in vol. 2 (256 items, p. 663-83) and in vol. 3 (658 items, p. 545-64). The sections on Namibia provide an unannotated list of books, theses, articles and documents, some of which are not easily available outside South Africa. The bibliographies are linked to the Institute for Contemporary History, University of the Orange Free State. INHC has one of South Africa's best collections of primary source material on contemporary political history, including the archives of the Namibian branch of the National Party. It has also an extensive press clipping system, and more than 20,000 articles and reports are selected each month from 33 South African newspapers and professional journals. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).
