In der Literatur wird Thiersch als Entwickler des Konzeptes der Lebensweltorientierung in der Sozialen Arbeit gehandelt. (Vgl. Galuske 2001 S.141) Bereits der Untertitel dieser Arbeit - Ein wissenschaftliches Praxiskonzept - zeigt die Verbindung von Wissenschaft einerseits und der Praxis auf der anderen Seite auf. Diese Arbeit reflektiert daher das Konzept der Lebensweltorientierung in der Sozialen Arbeit zwischen Wissenschaft und der Praxis sozialarbeiterischen Handelns. Dabei wird auch hinterfragt inwiefern die oftmals starre Zweiteilung der Sozialen Arbeit in Disziplin und Profession der Konzeption der Lebensweltorientierung angemessen ist. Hierzu findet zunächst eine Begriffsbestimmung von Alltag und Lebenswelt statt. Da für das Verständnis des Konzeptes die historische Entwicklung eine nicht hintergehbare Grundlage darstellt, wird die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Lebensweltorientierung im dritten Kapitel thematisiert. Das vierte Kapitel stellt gleichsam das Hauptkapitel dar, hier erfolgt die nach unterschiedlichen Gesichtspunkten gegliederte Darstellung des Konzeptes der Lebensweltorientierung in der Sozialen Arbeit. Dabei wird, wie bereits oben erwähnt, die Stellung des Konzeptes zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis ebenso thematisiert wie die Spannungsfelder, welche sich in der praktischen Umsetzung des Konzeptes ergeben. Insbesondere das Spannungsfeld, dass aus Hilfe auf der einen und Kontrolle auf der anderen Seite erwächst, wird dabei hinterfragt. Auch die Anforderungen, die sich an die Institutionen Sozialer Arbeit ergeben, werden hierbei kritisch betrachtet. Im fünften Kapitel erfolgt dann abschließend eine Betrachtung der Bestrebungen um Qualitätssicherung im Kontext lebensweltorientierter Sozialer Arbeit. Auch die Perspektiven, die sich aus dem Konzept der Lebensweltorientierung für die Soziale Arbeit resultieren werden abschließend berücksichtigt.

Zu Beginn wird ein kurzer Überblick über ein allgemeines Wissenschafts- sowie Theorieverständnis gegeben und die Entstehung des Konzeptes auf dem Hintergrund der historischen Entwicklung beleuchtet. Es folgt, aufbauend auf drei Wissenschaftskonzepten, eine Beschreibung von Alltag als Grundlage der Sozialen Arbeit. Im Abschnitt über die lebensweltorientierte Soziale Arbeit wird zunächst ihr Ziel dargestellt. Die Konkretisierung ihrer Aufgaben und damit auch die Erläuterung ihrer Stellung erfolgt anhand einer Strukturierung der Lebenswelt in Dimensionen und der Abbildung von Struktur- und Handlungsmaximen mit weiterer Spezifizierung. Als Quellen dienen überwiegend Texte von Thiersch in eigenen Veröffentlichungen oder als Aufsätze in anderen Bänden. Eine Überschneidung und Wiederholung der Themen, insbesondere bezüglich der Aufgaben der Sozialen Arbeit, in den einzelnen Kapiteln lassen sich nicht vermeiden, da Thiersch auf diese Weise sein Konzept verständlich machen will. In the wake of materialism and social change, man had been described in the early years of our century as the “dead end” of nature. Freud had redefined culture as illness—a result of drive sublimation; Klages had called the spirit (and he was surely speaking of the hypertrophied intellect) the “adversary of the soul,” propounding a return to a life like that of the Pelasgi, the aboriginal inhabitants of Greece; and Spengler had declared the “Demise of the West” during the years following World War I. The consequences of such pessimism continued to proliferate long after its foundations had been superseded. It was with these foundations—the natural sciences—that Gebser began. As early as Planck it was known that matter was not at all what materialists had believed it to be, and since 1943 Gebser has repeatedly emphasized that the so-called crisis of Western culture was in fact an essential restructuration.… Gebser has noted two results that are of particular significance: first, the abandonment of materialistic determinism, of a one-sided mechanistic-causal mode of thought; and second, a manifest “urgency of attempts to discover a universal way of observing things, and to overcome the inner division of contemporary man who, as a result of his one-sided rational orientation, thinks only in dualisms.” Against this background of recent discoveries and conclusions in the natural sciences Gebser discerned the outlines of a potential human universality. He also sensed the necessity to go beyond the confines of this first treatise so as to include the humanities (such as political economics and sociology) as well as the arts in a discussion along similar lines. Book excerpt: In Territories of Difference, Arturo Escobar, author of the widely debated book Encountering Development, analyzes the politics of difference enacted by specific place-based ethnic and environmental movements in the context of neoliberal globalization. His analysis is based on his many years of engagement with a group of Afro-Colombian activists of Colombia’s Pacific rainforest region, the Proceso de Comunidades Negras (PCN). Escobar offers a detailed ethnographic account of PCN’s visions, strategies, and practices, and he chronicles and analyzes the movement’s struggles for autonomy, territory, justice, and cultural recognition. Yet he also does much more. Consistently emphasizing the value of local activist knowledge for both understanding and social action and drawing on multiple strands of critical scholarship, Escobar proposes new ways for scholars and activists to examine and apprehend the momentous, complex processes engulfing regions such as the Colombian Pacific today. Escobar illuminates many interrelated dynamics, including the Colombian government’s policies of development and pluralism that created conditions for the emergence of black and indigenous social movements and those movements’ efforts to steer the region in particular directions. He examines attempts by capitalists to appropriate the rainforest and extract resources, by developers to set the region on the path of modernist progress, and by biologists and others to defend this incredibly rich biodiversity “hot-spot” from the most predatory activities of capitalists and developers. He also looks at the attempts of academics, activists, and intellectuals to understand all of these complicated processes. Territories of Difference is Escobar’s effort to think with Afro-Colombian intellectual-activists who aim to move beyond the limits of Eurocentric paradigms as they confront the ravages of neoliberal globalization and seek to defend their place-based cultures and territories.
