Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TobakkoNacht -- The Antismoking Endgame, is a frontal attack on the misuse of science and language to promote unjustified levels of smoking bans and taxes. The author, trained in statistics and propaganda analysis at Pennsylvania's Wharton School, "dissects" the scary antismoking studies that have made headlines over the past ten years. He shows clearly in each case how the data and language have been juggled to reach and promote the conclusions of those handing out the grant money and backs up his arguments with solid science clearly explained at a level that will satisfy both laymen and professionals. The book isn't all business though. It opens with a dystopian future tale of an "Endgame" in which the antismoking movement has gained full power and smokers are generally treated as near-criminals. The author explores the roots that could bring such a fiction into being and looks at the world that could be created... a very sad world indeed. The pseudo science used to push goals like outdoor smoking bans is also attacked with satire and with short essays taking the form of "Letters To The Editor" focusing on all the microarguments used by antismoking crusaders playing with their "scientifical" instruments and by fanatic who'd happily apply the same methodology to reducing automobile and alcohol use. A few more formal communications showing how to approach local and national governmental bodies are also offered, again with the benefit of exposing false arguments while showing how to effectively attack the "authoritative sources" that seek to silence the opposition with their prestige while pushing for ever wider bans and ever higher taxes. The book concludes with a strong section painting a path toward a winning endgame for those in the Free Choice movement, pointing to the weaknesses of the current crop of smoking prohibitionists and suggesting how they can best be countered. TobakkoNacht can best be summed up like this: It shows how the denormalization of smokers has warped science and ripped holes in our social fabric while transforming a worthy public health effort into a destructive social force assaulting our lives, our families, and our communities -- and it shows how to fight back!

Read carefully, and listen deeply."—Mary Oliver, National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Inspiring hope, solace, and courage in living through our losses, author Martín Prechtel, trained in the Tzutujil Maya shamanic tradition, shares profound insights on the relationship between grief and praise in our culture--how the inability that many of us have to grieve and weep properly for the dead is deeply linked with the inability to give praise for living. In modern society, grief is something that we usually experience in private, alone, and without the support of a community. Yet, as Prechtel says, "Grief expressed out loud for someone we have lost, or a country or home we have lost, is in itself the greatest praise we could ever give them. Grief is praise, because it is the natural way love honors what it misses." Prechtel explains that the unexpressed grief prevalent in our society today is the reason for many of the social, cultural, and individual maladies that we are currently experiencing. According to Prechtel, "When you have two centuries of people who have not properly grieved the things that they have lost, the grief shows up as ghosts that inhabit their grandchildren." These "ghosts," he says, can also manifest as disease in the form of tumors, which the Maya refer to as "solidified tears," or in the form of behavioral issues and depression. He goes on to show how this collective, unexpressed energy is the long-held grief of our ancestors manifesting itself, and the work that can be done to liberate this energy so we can heal from the trauma of loss, war, and suffering. At base, this "little book," as the author calls it, can be seen as a companion of encouragement, a little extra light for those deep and noble parts in all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the primitive pine-torch to the paraffin candle, how wide an interval! between them how vast a contrast! The means adopted by man to illuminate his home at night, stamp at once his position in the scale of civilisation. The fluid bitumen of the far East, blazing in rude vessels of baked earth; the Etruscan lamp, exquisite in form, yet ill adapted to its office; the whale, seal, or bear fat, filling the hut of the Esquimaux or Lap with odour rather than light; the huge wax candle on the glittering altar, the range of gas lamps in our streets,—all have their stories to tell. All, if they could speak (and, after their own manner, they can), might warm our hearts in telling, how they have ministered to man's comfort, love of home, toil, and devotion. Surely, among the millions of fire-worshippers and fire-users who have passed away in earlier ages, some have pondered over the mystery of fire; perhaps some clear minds have guessed shrewdly near the truth. Think of the time man has lived in hopeless ignorance: think that only during a period which might be spanned by the life of one man, has the truth been known. Atom by atom, link by link, has the reasoning chain been forged. Some links, too quickly and too slightly made, have given way, and been replaced by better work; but now the great phenomena are known—the outline is correctly and firmly drawn—cunning artists are filling in the rest, and the child who masters these Lectures knows more of fire than Aristotle did. The candle itself is now made to light up the dark places of nature; the blowpipe and the prism are adding to our knowledge of the earth's crust; but the torch must come first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The true horror of 1984 is not what was done to Winston Smith. The true horror was that the vast majority of the populace was happy, content, and believed that what their government was doing was right." That quote introduces what Britain's Numberwatch has called, "the most astonishing political saga since the rise of Adolph Hitler." Dissecting Antismokers' Brains examines the psychology and motivations that drive antismoking advocates while also analyzing their general abuse of language and science. The combination offers readers a solid foundation for understanding modern efforts to ban, tax, and harass smokers into nonexistence. Published in 2004, Brains remains ahead of its time with a startling freshness in its ideas and theories. The propaganda methods exposed here in their early development have grown and are being used even more intensively in the ads, press releases, and guidebooks of antismoking advocacy groups today. The modern stonewalling techniques examined in the author's follow-up volume, TobakkoNacht - The Antismoking Endgame are shown in their birthing forms in his early communications with advocates and the callous abuse of our love for children continues to be exploited as ads show evil wisps of smoke seeking out open windows to attack babies in their nurseries. McFadden's warnings of future campaigns to deny jobs and medical care to smokers, to extend smoking bans to apartments and outdoor spaces, and to apply similar conditioning/nudging techniques to the control of alcohol and fast foods have proven far too true. For those seeking an in-depth but comfortably readable examination of the foundations of the antismoking movement, this book is essential. Its focus on the combination of psychology, propaganda analysis, and the misuse of science makes it a solid volume for college courses in the areas of social change, scientific ethics, political manipulation, and the use and limits of governmental control over citizen behavior. At the same time, its meticulous deconstruction of the basic scientific and statistical arguments fueling government-imposed smoking bans makes it accessible to anyone who's ever wondered how smoking has moved to being regularly presented as both an antisocial and even "immoral" character trait. Dissecting Antismokers' Brains remains an indispensable volume for anyone disturbed by, wishing to understand, or wanting to fight the growth of governmental control over personal life choices and behaviors.

Book excerpt: After more than twenty years in the music business Bret Michaels has sold twenty-five million records and scored an amazing fifteen chartbusting Top 40 singles including the timeless #1 smash hit “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”?? Today, this award-winning, multi-platinum superstar’s career continues to move at lightning speed following VH1’s hit reality dating show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels —which aired for three seasons and featured a bevy of ladies competing for an all-access pass to Bret Michaels’s heart and to share in his superstar lifestyle. . Bret Michaels is, if nothing else, a true survivor. He has survived a lifelong battle as an insulin-dependent diabetic, a well-publicized near-fatal car crash in 1994, and the countless musical trends and fads of the last two decades. ???Now, Michaels continues his rebirth through this provocative chronicle of his life, in the tradition of Motley Crüe’s The Dirt . . Roses & Thorns reveals everything about Bret’s rockstardom, from the Pennsylvania creation of “the ultimate garage band,” to MTV’s banning of their explicit videos and their 2007 sold-out summer tour. ??Because he’s diabetic, Bret never participated in the drug- and booze-fueled partying like the others, but he was at the center of this movement of over-indulgence and has plenty of stories to tell. ??Also, Bret dishes on his short but notorious relationship with Pamela Anderson—which resulted in an infamous sex tape that circulated on the Internet and was released as a DVD in 2005. Readers will be captivated and entertained by Roses & Thorns , a fascinating account of one of the most enduring rock musicians of the past two decades. .

Book excerpt: The main object of this book is to help you understand what you are doing, and to create and develop your own techniques and rituals which will surely bring you the results you desire. It doesn't matter what your religion is. You really don't have to be religious (or anti-religious) at all. Candle burning is a Psychic and Psychological experience, and may compliment your particular faith by arranging your rituals to blend into it. Nevertheless, you need not do anything which you feel is inharmonious with your personal beliefs, as there are countless alternatives. The one basic simple fact we can feel sure of is that the act of burning candles does indeed cause an altered state of awareness, producing changes in circumstances. Think of the millions of men and women who have been persuaded and seduced, or extracted promises and proposals, concluded business deals, patched up squabbles, and resolved differences or opinion in the glowing magic of a candlelight supper. And many a birthday wish has come true when all the candle were blown out!
