Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Applications in Geography Paul M. Mather Department of Geography, University of Nottingham, England Geography graduates are expected to be computer literate, yet the literature on computing is often inaccessible to them. This book is intended for undergraduate students of geography who wish to familiarise themselves with the terminology of computers and to read about the ways in which computers are presently being used in geography. It assumes no prior knowledge of computers and no mathematical skills beyond those possessed by the average layman. The first two chapters form a technical introduction to computers and data. The remaining five chapters are devoted to individual topics representing a selection of the main areas of computer use in geography and show how computers can be used to acquire, process and display geographical data. Worked examples, with example data sets, are given for three program packages that are widely used by geographers--SPSS, SYMAP and GIMMS. The book is comprehensive in its coverage of the major areas of computer applications and will be of interest to geographers dealing with statistics, digital cartography, remote sensing, geographical information systems and simulation models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven essays describe state of the art developments in the use of computers and computer-assisted learning to teach geography. Descriptions of the use of computers in the teaching of geography in their respective countries are contributed by educators from the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, United States, USSR, Hong Kong, and Canada. The contributors were asked to summarize recent developments; outline hardware and software trends; note the response of teachers in using computers; outline the research needs; and give insight into the future. It is hoped this publication will point to future collaborative research and development possibilities for the international community of geographical educators. (APG)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography Education in the Digital World draws on theory and practice to provide a critical exploration of the role and practice of geography education within the digital world. It considers how living within a digital world influences teacher identity and professionalism and is changing young people’s lives. The book moves beyond the applied perspective of educational technology to engage with wider social and ethical issues of technology implementation and use of digital data within geography education. Situated at the intersection between research and practice, chapters draw on a wide range of theory to consider the role, adoption and potential challenges of a range of digital technologies in furthering geographical education for future generations. Bringing together academics from the fields of geography, geography education and teacher education, the book engages with four key themes within the digital world: Professional practice and personal identities. Geographical sources and connections. Geospatial technologies. Geographical fieldwork. This is a crucial read for geographers, geography educators and geography teacher educators, as well as those engaging with existing and new technologies to support geographical learning in the dynamic context of the digital world. It will also be of interest to any students, academics and policymakers wanting to better understand the impact of digital media on education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Simulation in Physical Geography Second Edition M.J. Kirkby, University of Leeds, UK, P.S. Naden, Institute of Hydrology, UK, T.P. Burt, University of Oxford, UK and D.P. Butcher, University of Huddersfield, UK Simulation modelling has grown in importance in geographical teaching and project work ever since microcomputers have become widely available. By developing a broad range of usable programs in an environmental context, this second edition of Computer Simulation in Physical Geography may be used both as a physical geography textbook and as a pathway to learning standard programming, since substantial sections of the book are devoted to the design, formulation and best use of programs. The book opens with an introduction to the subject, followed by a series of chapters each of which is devoted to a different type of model, including black box models, process models, mass and energy balance models, and stochastic models. The second half of the book contains methods for model or program formulation and various means of verifying and calibrating models against field data. The choice of an appropriate model for a given situation is considered, together with the building of rationally based computer simulations from geographical assumptions. Example programs are drawn from ecology, hydrology, meteorology and hillslope and fluvial geomorphology, and these give a flavour of current research trends. All programs are contained on a supplementary disk in Microsoft QuickBASIC, QBASIC (standard with DOS 5-0) or GWBASIC (standard with earlier DOS versions). The distinct advantages of this second edition over the first are the major changes that have been made in updating the programs to the more structured environment of QuickBASIC, which also enables the utilisation of the superior CGA, EGA and VGA graphics on current DOS systems.
