Book excerpt: Generation 1.5 students are American-educated children of immigrants who have completed part of their elementary and sometimes, secondary education in their native country and in their native language before immigrating to the United States (Harklau, Losey, and Siegal, 1999; Goen, Porter, Swanson, & vanDommelen, 2002; Thonus, 2003). Because of the interruption in their education, many Generation 1.5 students experience difficulties as they negotiate through the academic reading and writing requirements of the freshman college composition course even after they graduate from an U.S. high school. At the same time, the schism in research between composition studies and second language instruction has resulted in the difficulty of composition specialists to understand and address problems faced by second language learners, especially Generation 1.5 students (Matsuda, 2003; Silva & Leki, 2004). This study investigated the impact of Learning Communities (LCs) as an alternative format of delivering instruction to Generation 1.5 students in freshman composition classes in a community college. An LC offers two or more linked classes as well as additional support in the form of tutoring, mentorship, and counseling to a cohort of students (Brownell & Swaner, 2009; Killachy, Thomas, & Accomando, 2002; Smith, MacGregor, Matthews, & Gabelnick, 2004). Participants in this semester-long study included six Generation 1.5 students, four of whom were enrolled in composition classes within two separate LCs, and two in a stand-alone composition course. Data for this study emerged from essays and interviews of the six participants as well as interviews with their instructors and tutors. These data were analyzed qualitatively to assess the manner in which the LCs shaped the writing skills of the participants. The study demonstrated that well-designed LCs had a number of positive, even redundant features from which several participants chose the most appropriate ones to improve their writing skills. In doing so, they became active actors in the learning process, using their funds of knowledge and working with instructors, tutors, and their peers to improve their academic skills. However, other students, some with a higher level of confidence in their writing skills, resisted the idea of participating in LCs and their academic progress was less obvious. The study is significant as it contributes to the fields of both second language composition studies and the learning communities. The study addresses the existing gap in research on Generation 1.5 students, a subset of second language learners, in the composition classroom. It also explores the potential of LCs in serving these students in their freshman year in college.

Chapter 8 considers the indirect impact of administrative priorities on classroom literacy. Book excerpt: Though Assembly Bill 705 was passed in California to reduce gaps in retention and completion for community college students of color, these equity gaps persist. This study used quantitative and qualitative research methods to examine factors that influence enrollment choices and success in gatekeeper courses, like English, for African American community college students. Of particular focus were institutional supports and the role of learning communities. This study's findings mostly confirm existing research on learning communities and other institutional supports, like counseling, and the ways in which these supports help students enroll in and complete courses. Primary findings from this study emphasize the importance of creating Educational Plans with counselors and frequent contact with counselors. The quality of professors was also perceived to influence students' academic success, in addition to precollege factors, such as pre-existing writing skills. This study was grounded in two theoretical frameworks: Regina Deil-Amen's (2011) Socio-Academic Integrative Moments and Laura Rendon's (1994) Theory of Validation. The important role that learning communities play in community building and increasing a sense of belonging among students of color are validated through the lenses of these theories.

The setting of this research is Hillsborough Community College, Queensborough Community College and Houston Community College. Findings from these three Learning Communities Demonstration sites are as follows: (1) Hillsborough's fairly basic Learning Communities' model did not have a meaningful impact on students' academic success (in terms of likelihood of completing developmental reading, average total credits attempted/earned, and rates of persistence); (2) Both Houston's and Queensborough's Learning Communities programs showed evidence of helping students progress through the developmental math sequence more quickly; and (3) Houston's and Queensborough's Learning Communities programs both did not show evidence of lasting impacts on credit accumulation or retention. Book excerpt: Those from marginalized populations, many of whom are first-generation college students (FGCS), often face barriers to accessing secondary education (Pitre & Pitre, 2009). Additionally, when students from such groups do successfully enroll in post-secondary educational opportunities, their graduation rates remain low (DeAngelo, Franke, Hurtado, Pryor & Tran, 2011; Engle, 2007). At the same time, there appears to be a correlation between positive social and academic assimilation, family support, and college success (Falcon, 2015). One promising intervention aligned with the goal of fostering social integration for FGCS and the focus of this research, is a living-learning community (LLC). LLCs are college living communities in which students have access to faculty and professional staff as well as opportunities to bond with their peers. The purpose of this study was to identify the role LLCs had on one group of FGCS’ transition to their next academic year in relation to feeling socially and academically integrated on their campus and to help professionals in higher education understand how critical it is for first-generation college students to find a sense of belonging on their campus. This study’s qualitative results illuminated how the LLC model provided a bridge between students’ academic and non-academic lives, addressing specific learning focus and enhancing their university experience. It also provided the students with a space for intentional support on how they can better integrate in their college.
