Book excerpt: In this paper, the reactive flow control of delta wing leading edge vortices using along-core pulse width modulation (PWM) flow injection is presented. Leading edge vortices on the upper surface of a delta wing can augment lift. Manipulating breakdown points of leading edge vortices can effectively change the delta wing's lift and drag and generate attitude control torque. In this paper, a dynamic model of active flow control of vortex break down points is identified from wind tunnel data using a model scheduling method. Based on the identified model, a closed-loop active flow controller is developed. Simulation and real-time wind tunnel test show that the closed-loop controller can effectively manipulate the upper surface pressure of the delta wing, which indicates the closed-loop controller can effectively control vortex breakdown points.

Book excerpt: Boundary Labs, LLC is an early-stage company composed of three students at Case Western Reserve University which aimed to evaluate the feasibility of commercialization of a novel dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator as an active flow control (AFC) method in wind turbines. The hypothesized benefits of DBD plasma actuators for AFC include improved energy capture from wind, low cost, and ease of implementation. This thesis is a two-part case study. The first part emulates a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Proposal for the technology and includes discussions arguing that a strong commercial potential for the proposed technology exists in the United States and that technical development is feasible. The second part includes miscellaneous sections outside the scope of an SBIR proposal, leading to a discussion of the Boundary Labs team decision to discontinue development of this technology.

Book excerpt: The vortical flow over a delta wing contributes an important part of the lift - the so called nonlinear lift. Controlling this vortical flow with its favorable influence would enhance aircraft maneuverability at high angle of attack. Several previous studies have shown that control of the vortical flow field is possible through the use of blowing jets. The present experimental research studies vortical flow control by applying a new blowing scheme to the rounded leading edge of a delta wing; this blowing scheme is called Tangential Leading Edge Blowing (TLEB). Vortical flow response both to steady blowing and to unsteady blowing is investigated. It is found that TLEB can redevelop stable, strong vortices even in the post-stall angle of attack regime. Analysis of the steady data shows that the effect of leading edge blowing can be interpreted as an effective change in angle of attack. The examination of the fundamental time scales for vortical flow re-organization after the application of blowing for different initial states of the flow field is studied. Different time scales for flow re-organization are shown to depend upon the effective angle of attack. A faster response time can be achieved at angles of attack beyond stall by a suitable choice of the initial blowing momentum strength. Consequently, TLEB shows the potential of controlling the vortical flow over a wide range of angles of attack; i.e., in both for pre-stall and post-stall conditions. Lee, K. Book Synopsis Effects of Pulsation Frequency on Trailing Edge Plasma Actuators for Flight Control by : Frederick William Hamlin

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis details the aerodynamic testing of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator operating over a separation step created at the trailing edge of a modified NACA 0012 aerofoil. The work focuses specifically on the use of pulsed or interrupted plasma actuation as opposed to continuously driven actuation, to increase the change in the lift produced by activating the system. The behaviour of the actuation system is characterised in a lamina flow regime at a Reynolds number of 1.33 x 105 using force balance measurements. At zero incidence the actuator produced a peak change in CL of approximately 0.015. However, this result is sensitive to changes in the interruption frequency of the plasma, by changing the plasma drive waveform the system was able to produce both positive and negative changes in lift. A relationship was identified between the change in CL produced and the ratio of the plasma interruption frequency to the natural vortex shedding frequency. This effect was investigated using both time averaged particle image velocimetry (PIV) and instantaneous phase locked PIV images captured in sequence throughout the plasma interruption cycle. The phase locked images showed how variation in the pulsation frequency was able to produce bi-directional actuation by either constructively or destructively interfering with the vortex formation from the back of the separation step. This interference in turn altered the level of separation which was occurring, altering the degree of upwash in the wake and therefore the lift generated by the aerofoil. PIV images were also gathered for device operation at a Reynolds number of 2.3 x 104; this produced a much higher ratio of DBD jet energy to that of the freestream. These conditions showed modified actuator behaviour due to the increased authority over the flow. However, the data still showed a strong interdependence on the reinforcement or destruction of the vortex street by the actuator interruption. Furthermore, work was undertaken to develop an actuator topology based on thin metallised films along with a dielectric which was hardened against the chemical and electrical stresses present in a functioning DBD device. The failure mechanisms of metallised film actuators were investigated, and actuators with lifetimes exceeding 8 hours were demonstrated. A manufacture method for a silicon polymer (PDMS) - Kapton® laminate is detailed; this is shown to be highly resistant to both electrical breakdown and chemical attack by the oxygen plasma.

Book Synopsis Unsteady Structure of Leading-Edge Vortices on a Delta Wing by :
Download or read book Unsteady Structure of Leading-Edge Vortices on a Delta Wing written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of this research program was to characterize the unsteady flow structure on wings having swept edges. Wings were subjected to global control, involving motion of the entire wing, and local control, involving perturbations at specified locations on the surface of the wing. New types of experimental facilities and image acquisition and processing techniques have allowed determination of the instantaneous vorticity distributions and streamline patterns of the flow. The occurrence of vortex breakdown and stall and their phase shifts relative to the wing motion and to control at the leading-edges have been interpreted in terms of new flow mechanisms.
