In business schools, dynamics do not naturally encourage leadership development. Leadership pipelines with clearly defined stages have been in use in the non-academic corporate sector for a while. This book presents research on the potential for business schools to rely on such pipelines. The proposed substantive grounded theory suggests a better depiction of the phenomenon analogy-wise as well as semantics-wise by proposing a leadership canal. Several fundamental assumptions diverge, such as leadership development for deans being less linear, less cumulative, less sequential, less one-directional, to name but a few features.

Book excerpt: This study examines gender differences in leadership style and the influence of these differences on perceived leader effectiveness in higher education. Leadership style is defined in gendered terms, which include traditionally agentic styles for men and communal styles for women, and therefore transformational and transactional leadership styles are closely examined. Data were gathered from a two-stage national survey of college presidents and their senior-level leaders, faculty, and administrators from over 200 postsecondary institutions in the United States to analyze these differences in leadership style and leader effectiveness. Multiple block regression analyses demonstrate that gender has a mild correlation with perceived effectiveness, with female presidents being slightly more likely to be perceived as effective leaders. In addition, transformational leadership, which is often connected with communal leadership behaviors, is highly correlated with leader effectiveness. These findings are consistent with the literature in that transformational leaders that exert communal and relational leadership behaviors are usually viewed as more effective leaders than their transactional counterparts that enact agentic behaviors. Finally, institutional context also has a strong relationship with perceived effectiveness for both leaders and subordinates. The research results have implications for transformational leadership training, mentoring, fostering female leadership, and improving institutional context.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that women managers in the United States were considered more effective when they were rated higher than men in factors related to transformational leadership. Given that culture and a woman's position within a culture are different in the Middle East, this study was designed to examine the impact of gender on the effectiveness of leadership in higher education in three universities in Lebanon and Egypt. Theories of transformational leadership and Hofstede's theory were used as a basis for understanding gender and leadership effectiveness in higher education in the Middle East. The researcher used a quantitative approach and she collected data by randomly selecting 12 leaders (deans) and 72 followers (professors and employees) from the three universities. Participants were asked to complete the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to measure the effectiveness of leadership of the deans. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for data analysis. Data was analyzed by using ANOVA for exploring the relationship between gender and leadership effectiveness and Pearson correlation to explore the relationship between the three leadership styles and leadership effectiveness. The results showed that gender does not impact leadership effectiveness. There was no significant effect of gender on leadership effectiveness. Thus, women leaders were as effective as men leaders in those universities. The results also indicated that women at the three universities used the transformational leadership style and that men at the three universities used the transactional leadership style.
