Book excerpt: Leadership skills are a necessary part of the preparation of community college students for university transfer or employment. However, the development of leadership skills for traditional-age community college students can be challenging based on al traits and issues related to the community college context. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of leadership and personal development of leadership skills among traditional-age community college students. After collecting data through interviews with thirteen traditional-age community college students, general inductive analysis was utilized to investigate the perceptions and experiences related to leadership development. By using the leadership identity development theory as a theoretical framework, analysis resulted in the themes Defining Leadership, which included leadership identity, influence, qualities of effective leaders, and qualities of ineffective leaders; and Developing Leadership, which consisted of the impact of others, impact of personal experiences, and perceptions of personal leadership development. Participants reported varied movement through the leadership identity development model based on both the examples of others and personal experiences. Millennial generational traits were both beneficial and challenging to leadership development, as was the context of the community college. Performing arts students also exhibited a more developed leadership identity than did participants involved in athletics. Community college faculty, staff, and administrators can find relevance in these findings as they continue to assist students in developing leadership skills. Additional research in organizational-based leadership development, as well as continued research on the impact of experience in leadership identity development, is needed.

Book excerpt: Greater knowledge of specific populations? perception of the capacity for change will assist leadership practitioners in the design and implementation of effective leadership programs. These leadership programs will hopefully prepare students to lead effectively in a rapidly changing society where a strong capacity for change is needed. This study examined three specific populations of undergraduate students who participated in the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership in 2006. The three populations of interest were first generation college students, transfer students and male students. The purpose of the study was to determine the self-perceived capacity to adapt to change for selected college student populations based on the Social Change Model of Leadership (Appendix A). A second purpose was to determine differences in this self-perceived capacity to adapt to change between and among these selected college student populations. Responses to the 10 individual items of the Change Scale (MSL) were measured and analyzed to determine if any significant differences and/or interactions existed in the data. The results of this study inform the design of both Academic and Student Affairs student leadership development programs to enhance the leadership development of these selected student populations. The research design for the study included the use of descriptive statistics, a correlation matrix to examine the relationships of the 10 individual items of the change scale, and a 3X10 MANOVA. These tests and measures were utilized on all three independent variables (generational status, transfer status and gender) and the 10 individual items of the change scale within the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale. This study identified distinct differences between/among the three populations of interest and provided numerous recommendations for practice such as tapping into the unique life experiences of transfer and first generation college students to learn more about their stronger capacity for managing change and specifically recruiting students from the three populations of interest to assist in the delivery of change-related curriculum within leadership programs. Another recommendation was made for leadership practitioners to utilize the Social Change Model of Leadership development to help with the development of leaders who will share a commitment to positive change at the individual, group and community levels.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this grounded theory study was to understand the process of leadership identity development experienced by traditional-aged female undergraduate college students. The findings led to a model for leadership identity development consisting of four phases. In Phase 1: Awareness and Exploration, students viewed leadership as external to themselves instead of something to which they aspired. In Phase 2: Leader Identified, students equated leadership with a title or position and saw themselves as leaders only when they were elected to a position. In Phase 3: Leadership Differentiated, students understood that leadership could derive from any source regardless of a position, yet they continued to see themselves as leaders because of their positions. In Phase 4: Generativity, students understood their responsibility to develop others as leaders. In this phase some students also realized a need to address change, specifically with regard to societal views of women and people of color. In the early phases of the model, the female students in this study saw gender as irrelevant to them as leaders even though they recognized societal views of female leaders as weaker or less capable. In later phases they understood how being female mattered, and by Phase 4 they recognized a need to take a stand on societal issues related to gender and race. This study provides valuable insights on the development of female student leadership identity to help leadership educators and student affairs professionals construct intentionally designed programs, yet much remains to be learned.

Book excerpt: Colleges and universities continually seek to foster the leadership development of undergraduate students through curricular and co-curricular opportunities and experiences. This study examined the effects and potential contributions of participation in campus-based leadership trainings on college students' leadership development with special consideration for gender and racial background. To better understand the relationship between campus-based trainings and leadership development, data from the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education (WNS) was utilized. The WNS was a multi-institutional, longitudinal dataset made up of 47 four-year colleges and universities from 21 states throughout the United States. This study mark's one of the first multi-year, multi-institution longitudinal studies to investigate the relationship between campus-based leadership trainings and leadership development. The results of the study pointed to several over-arching themes. The first theme was that a student's background and leadership experience prior to college matter. Next, a student's curricular success matters, and influences their leadership gains throughout all aspects of the SCM. The interactions students have with peers who are different from themselves matters. Leadership development opportunities need to be intentionally designed. Finally, campus-based leadership trainings offer a potential programmatic option for institutions to help develop their students as socially responsible leaders, regardless of backgrounds and other experiences.

First reported at the beginning of 2000, the gap continues to grow, and recent research highlights the continuing trend. In the near future, several hundred new presidents are needed to take the helm of the nation’s two-year colleges. The next generation of leaders will be new to this primary role, and they and the community college system will face new leadership challenges, even different issues from just a few short years ago. Consequently, the problem is that current presidential development programs may not be adequate in the face of these yet undefined challenges. Certainly they teach useful concepts and practices; however, their effectiveness can be enhanced by going beyond the field of education and by drawing on more than the experience of just those who have spent their careers in the higher education arena. This dissertation argues that one field of scholarship that might prove particularly useful to future community college leaders is the field of management. Many significant and current management theories can be relevant to better develop, equip, and arm leaders and managers of the nation’s community colleges. The purpose of this study is to offer five selected significant and current management theories and practices and apply those theories to enhance the leadership competencies and professional skills identified by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) (2005). The primary focus will be on contemporary universal theories of leadership and management that can be applied and are practical for the community college leader.
