Book Synopsis The Evolutionary Basis of Strabismus and Nystagmus in Children by : Michael C. Brodsky
Download or read book The Evolutionary Basis of Strabismus and Nystagmus in Children written by Michael C. Brodsky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a comprehensive collection and discussion of scientific essays that define the pathogenesis of common forms of pediatric strabismus and nystagmus in terms of their common evolutionary mechanisms. The goal of this book is to assemble these essays, to provide a definitive source for current clinicians to use along with follow up comments to help direct future scientific research in the field of pediatric ophthalmology. This book includes 20 original essays written by Michael C. Brodsky which mechanistically explain and unify such enigmatic conditions such as infantile esotropia, latent nystagmus, primary oblique muscle overreaction action, dissociated vertical divergence, infantile nystagmus, and intermittent exotropia in terms of ancestral evolutionary reflexes which become expressed in different ways to generate these disorders. This collection of essays is poised to become a classic reference, providing the necessary neurological framework for contextualizing unique ocular motor disorder and understanding the evolutionary mechanisms responsible for their development in early childhood. Written with focused interest for pediatric ophthalmologists and neuro-ophthalmologists, this reference will also find audience with ophthalmologists, neurologists, evolutionary biologists, and neuroscientists.

Book excerpt: Clinical Methods of Neuro-Ophthalmologic Examination presents the clinical methods of ophthalmologic examination that may be helpful in neurologic differential diagnosis. Neuro-ophthalmologic examination has developed in two directions: the more precise methods and the unrefined yet fairly exact methods, such as diagnostic measurement by means of a simple ruler. This book is based on lectures delivered by the author to neurologists and ophthalmologists. This book is composed of 13 chapters and begins with a presentation of anatomic details that are important for the understanding of the various signs and symptoms. The next chapters examine the development of simple perimetry into quantitative perimetry and angio-scotometry, as well as the pathology of the optic nerve. Considerable chapters are devoted to intensive discussions on group of diseases that affect in a parallel way the central nervous system and the eye, such as chiasmal and retrochiasmal lesions, nystagmus, symmetrical eye movement disturbance, palpebral fissure, hemicrania. The final chapter outlines a routine neuro-ophthalmological examination. This book is directed toward neurologists and ophthalmologists.

Book Synopsis Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy (PVR) by : H. MacKenzie Freeman
Download or read book Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy (PVR) written by H. MacKenzie Freeman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an update both on the present management of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and on clinical and experimental research being done to control this disease. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the current management of PVR. The Retina Society Classification of PVR is based in part on a gradation of severity from minimal to massive; therefore, this book attempts to correlate the management of PVR with its severity. The treatment of PVR of varying degrees of severity, from mild to the most severe form, is described by those authors with extensive experience with this spectrum of cases. Much progress has been made in the management of severe PVR as a result of vitreous injections, vitrectomy, periretinal membrane surgery, and retinal surgery. Authors in this book show that in mild and moderately severe PVR excellent results can be obtained with techniques that are less invasive and possibly less likely to stimulate further abnormal cellular proliferation. The new modalities for treatment of PVR are discussed by authors having extensive experience with them. The current status of pharmacological treatment and new concepts of the pathobiology of PVR are discussed. The second part of the book deals with questions frequently encountered in the management of PVR. These questions are answered by a panel of experts including Gary W. Abrams, Steven T. Charles, William H. Havener, Robert Machemer, Charles L. Schepens, and Walter H. Stern.
