Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversies that have developed in recent years in the field of education and training around program and competency-based approaches are not without reminiscent of those which are at the origin of a reflection on the question of methods to monitor, control, organize and shape innovation in science and technology "and led to the emergence of the notion of responsibility for innovation and research "(Pellé & Reber, 2015). This book is clearly part of this type of approach. Starting from a current state of play on the issues and controversies raised by curricular and competency-based approaches (Chapters 1 and 2), this book aims at presenting new theoretical frameworks, allowing to account for the processes implied by the implementation of these pedagogical innovations and, in particular, those which, at the very heart of the skills mobilized, promote a "responsibility" dimension. Based on a developmental approach to individual and collective competencies and their evaluation (Chapters 3, 4 and 5), it attempts to show how this approach can mobilize educational practices on strong societal issues, such as "sustainable development "(Chapter 5). Lastly, it aims to provide theoretical and practical benchmarks to help engage educational teams and institutions in these innovative and responsible approaches by providing a coherent framework for doing so (Chapters 6, 7 and 8).

Book excerpt: Argumentation—arriving at conclusions on a topic through a process of logical reasoning that includes debate and persuasion— has in recent years emerged as a central topic of discussion among science educators and researchers. There is now a firm and general belief that fostering argumentation in learning activities can develop students’ critical thinking and reasoning skills, and that dialogic and collaborative inquiries are key precursors to an engagement in scientific argumentation. It is also reckoned that argumentation helps students assimilate knowledge and generate complex meaning. The consensus among educators is that involving students in scientific argumentation must play a critical role in the education process itself. Recent analysis of research trends in science education indicates that argumentation is now the most prevalent research topic in the literature. This book attempts to consolidate contemporary thinking and research on the role of scientific argumentation in education. Perspectives on Scientific Argumentation brings together prominent scholars in the field to share the sum of their knowledge about the place of scientific argumentation in teaching and learning. Chapters explore scientific argumentation as a means of addressing and solving problems in conceptual change, reasoning, knowledge-building and the promotion of scientific literacy. Others interrogate topics such as the importance of language, discursive practice, social interactions and culture in the classroom. The material in this book, which features intervention studies, discourse analyses, classroom-based experiments, anthropological observations, and design-based research, will inform theoretical frameworks and changing pedagogical practices as well as encourage new avenues of research.

Over the past ten years there has been a dearth of books that have informed the debate by examining curriculum in a broader context, beyond the National Curriculum. Ross, in this refreshing re-examination of the area, opens up a more general debate on how the curriculum is shaped and the compromises made between different ideologies of the nature and purpose of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, information and technological developments grow at a rapid pace. Social and political life becomes more and more complicated and, in this process, active citizenship becomes more essential. Knowledge-driven changes in society and economies require individuals to quickly acquire new skills. Otherwise, it is increasingly difficult for employees to adapt to business life and to find a job. Education has to take account of these circumstances, adapt to the rapid developments in the world and educate individuals to continue lifelong learning. For this, skills such as active and independent learning, assertiveness, creativity, self-improvement, lifelong learning are important. Skill teaching differs from knowledge teaching. Skill is the transfer of knowledge to practice. This process involves a learning process that requires the steps of researching, planning, controlling and correcting. The knowledge should be organized, integrated, transferred into practice, mental and physical resources should be activated, and knowledge use should be demonstrated in practice in order to improve the skill. This book contributes to the teaching of skills and includes basic concepts and skills, language skills, science and mathematics skills, psycho-social skills and visual arts skills. It also explains how to teach skills, how to prepare for activities and how to implement activities in educational settings. These applications are intended to draw attention to skill teaching, to raise educators, to increase the success of education, to improve the skills of students, and to enable them to use the skills they have learned in school outside of school and in complex tasks.
