Elle s’intéresse au moment où l’enfant de 4/6 ans appréhende l’écrit comme du langage et fait donc usage de ce dernier en lecture/écriture. L’hypothèse est que les subvocalisations (auto-langage) qui accompagnent l’activité d’écriture relèvent du langage intérieur et qu’il est possible d’enseigner sa mobilisation pour l’enfant qui ne le fait pas. Nous identifions tout d’abord un procédé visuel d’écriture – l’autocopie – auquel l’enfant recourt quand on lui demande d’ecrire des mots en liste : il recopie des suites de lettres ou recopie une quantité de lettres pour différencier ses graphies. Puis, nous décrivons le rôle de l’auto-langage en écriture : quand l’enfant a compris la nature langagière de l’écrit, il y recourt à des fins de mémorisation immédiate et de contrôle de son écriture, bien avant la maîtrise des correspondances phonographiques. C’est avec cet outil structurant de la pensée que l’enfant peut analyser l’oral. Nous menons ensuite deux interventions didactiques pour inciter l’enfant à le mobiliser. Elles consistent en l’application d’un protocole d’intériorisation de l’auto-langage et d’aides à la relecture et à la réécriture. Les analyses statistiques et cliniques montrent que cet apprentissage est possible. L’enfant dépasse une conception visuelle de l’écrit et abandonne les procédés visuels comme l’autocopie. Il ne se perd plus en conjectures quant à la nature de l'écrit et concentre ses efforts sur l’application d’une seule règle, la segmentation de l’oral. La mobilisation de l’auto-langage semble nécessaire à la mobilisation des connaissances de correspondances oral/écrit.
