Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the attitudes and perceptions of Hispanics living in Tampa Bay, Florida regarding foster parent roles. The theory guiding this study is the researcher’s axiological philosophical assumption. The philosophical assumption is applied within the social constructivist interpretive framework. The researcher seeks to understand the study participants' world and develop meaning to their lived experiences, as discussed during the interviews. The participants’ views are the primary source of reliance for the research (Creswell & Poth, 2018). The researcher’s position in this study is relative to their social position, personal, political, and professional beliefs when utilizing the axiological philosophical assumption (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This study explored why Hispanics may or may not choose to become foster parents or caregivers to children in foster care. Data were collected through guided interviews and field notes including notes regarding observable body language or facial expression. The researcher conducted data analysis utilizing the Interpretative Phenomenological Approach to interpret the data drawn from participant interviews. Study results sought to understand the lived experiences of Hispanics in the United States that contribute to their perceptions about foster parent and caregiver roles for foster children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inadequacy of the foster care system has long been recognized. One of the biggest obstacles to reforming the system is the relative unavailability of research data from the field, information that would shed light on key empirical trends and pressing issues. ø This long overdue volume provides a much-needed overview of the current state of foster care. Leading researchers and practitioners summarize and discuss the results of their current research, providing through their data an unparalleled, detailed glimpse of the inner workings of the foster care system in its entirety. The volume is also valuable for its survey and syntheses of important issues and trends affecting foster care. Subjects discussed include welfare reform, reporting systems, family reunification, mental health services, and the needs of minority children. Wide-ranging and detailed in its coverage, this collection is destined to become an essential reference and guide to the foster care system.

It was intended to understand from a group of Latino foster mothers' firsthand information. To meet this goal, the study identified some characteristics of the participants to better understand and help to improve in recruiting and retaining efforts of Latino foster parent to serve the Latino children entering foster care. Method: a sample of 17 foster mothers were split into two focus groups according to length of fostering experience. 10 participants were newly certified from zero to five years and the other seven participants were experienced with six to twelve years of fostering. Results: Five focus questions were presented to each group and each led to an outside theme within the conversation of the group. It was found that foster mothers were motivated by the following factors: making a difference in a child's life, relating to a child's trauma through some personal experience, and monetary compensation. It was also found that the participants shared the need of more support and recognition to help with maintenance of their motivation. Discussion: Latina foster mothers' satisfaction is related to their perceptions about making a difference in a child's life and some type of compensation whether monetary or recognition. No foster mother shared wanting to quit fostering children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: When children are placed in temporary foster care, often it is with other family members while their biological parents comply with court orders. However, Latino foster children can sometimes be placed under the care of non-kin families who are culturally different from the children. This can be detrimental to the children's growth and cultural identity development. Currently, the child welfare system is experiencing a shortage of qualified Latino foster parents who can provide foster care. This grant proposal is an innovative and culturally specific campaign to help increase the availability of qualified Latino foster parents. With funding provided by the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, the goal of this project is to educate Latino families about foster parenting and to increase the number of new non-kin foster parents for Concept7, a nonprofit foster family agency in Orange County, California. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.
