Book excerpt: Being a fifteen-year-old wolf shifter is totally overrated. Especially when I can't actually turn into a wolf. To make matters worse, I've got a secret every other shifter would kill me for. A secret that got my parents killed. It's a secret I was planning on keeping - until I met Lucy Stone and the Clear Creek pack. Now two of the pack have gone missing, and there may be a link between the recent kidnappings and my parents' deaths. After fifteen years of hiding, the truth is finally catching up with me. The question is - do I keep running, or do I stand and fight? "Latent Wolf" is the first instalment in the epic paranormal adventure/romance Tobias Finch series.

Book excerpt: This seminar referred to latent herpes virus infections in veterinary medicine, with emphasis on the domestic animals. The phenomenon of latency is of particular importance in veterinary medicine because it can jeopardize the successful control and eradication of diseases such as Aujeszky's disease and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, diseases which are often the cause of great economic losses. For this reason, the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) realized the importance of summarizing the present state of knowledge on latent herpes virus infections in veterinary medicine. A seminar was therefore organized by the Federal Research Institute for Animal Virus Diseases in Ttibingen, Federal Republic of Germany, from September 21 to 23, 1982, as a part of the 'Animal Pathology Programme' of the CEC. The seminar was attended by 50 participants not only from the countries of the CEC, and 38 papers were selected for presentation. In veterinary medicine, more intensive investigations on the latency of animal herpes viruses have only relatively recently been initiated. In contrast, great efforts have been made for many years to elucidate latency in human and primate herpes viruses, and consequently the most considerable advances have been made in this field. Some of the most experienced scientists working on both systems were therefore invited. As a result, this seminar was the first occasion on which scientists from different countries and faculties investigating herpes virus latency had the opportunity to present and exchange their latest results. Book excerpt: [Siren Everlasting Classic ManLove: Erotic Romance, Alternative, Consensual BDSM, Paranormal, Werewolves, Public Exhibition, Whipping, Spanking, Flogging, Paddling, Play Piercing, Sex Toys, MM, HEA] Book 1: Available - Ryan Adamson is the beta for Alpha Mustang’s wolf pack. He never has relationships with anyone other than the pack-appointed availables and willing pack submissives, and he likes that just fine. He hasn’t had the best luck with relationships in the past and finds meaningless sex much easier to deal with than a boyfriend. Unfortunately for him, Bradley seeks to change his mind. Bradley Gage has been in love with Ryan since the wolf-shifter saved his life six months ago. Something inside tells him that Ryan is his mate and the stubborn wolf just needs to admit it. Getting him to admit it, however, might be easier said than done. Getting inked with an "available" tattoo is the start of an unconventional courtship that will test Bradley’s commitment to Ryan and bring him face-to-face with some unexpected aspects of his own past in order to get his happily ever after with the man of his dreams. Book 2: Saved by Surrender - Regan Adamson has a secret. As beta for the blackfoot pack, the only thing required of him is acting like a Dominant male. In the world of pack, switching is not an option but when he meets the omega, Titus, his resolve to ignore his need for occasional submission is put to the test. Titus Oswin is on a mission to rescue a kidnapped group of humans. He never expected to meet his mate in the process. An admitted switch, Titus refused in the past to accept a lover who doesn’t Dominate and submit. But Regan is so deep in the submissive closet that Titus isn’t even sure the instant attraction and growing respect between them is enough for him to take a chance on their relationship. As troubles within and without the pack arise, Regan will have to decide if being with Titus will be his ultimate downfall or if he will be saved by his surrender. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of the latency strategies developed during the estimated 200,000 year-long coevolution of Alpha-, Beta- and Gammaherpesvirinae and their host species. While the main emphasis is on herpesviruses infecting humans, relevant cases if herpesviruses infecting animals are covered as well. Special emphasis is given to results on molecular mechanisms regulating latent promoters of herpesvirus genomes and signals and molecular pathways resulting in reactivation of latent viral genomes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both academically rigorous and clinically practical, Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders is fully informed by the new DSM-5 category that includes adjustment disorders, acute stress disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Stress and trauma have long been recognized as playing a role in the etiology of certain psychiatric disorders, and this book delineates normal and pathological responses to stress, providing a conceptual framework for understanding trauma- and stressor-related disorders. An individual's response to stress depends on numerous genetic, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurobiological risk and protective factors, and these are examined from both a scientific and clinical perspective. Central to the book's utility is its presentation of clinical vignettes that help the reader to contextualize the information presented and model effective clinical skills. Among the volume's critically important topics and features are A robust section on assessing the psychosocial factors associated with resilience (e.g., optimism, cognitive flexibility, a social support network), encouraging and enhancing these factors, and implementing psychosocial interventions to aid patients who have experienced trauma to promote resilience by targeting these factors. A comprehensive chapter on the medical-legal aspects of trauma- and stressor-related disorders because clinicians working with these patients frequently encounter situations that have legal implications (e.g., capacity evaluations, informed consent, confidentiality, serving as a witness in court proceedings). Full coverage of controversies unique to this group of disorders. For example, because no other set of DSM-5 diagnoses require a stressor as an etiological agent, this dimension can add considerable controversy to these diagnoses. Comprehensive overview of the development of the stress and trauma disorders chapter of the upcoming revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11, expected for 2017), including crosswalk tables to compare ICD-10, DSM-5, and the planned ICD-11 and featuring a summary of the evidence base for specific treatments for ICD-10 or ICD-11 stress and trauma disorder categories. In addition, key points, informative Web sites, and recommended reading at the end of each chapter are designed to consolidate and extend the practitioner's knowledge base. Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders provides readers with the latest research and treatment recommendations in an expertly edited, easy-to-use format that will earn its place in the clinician's library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many viruses are known to persist in their host’s cells in a latent state without exhibiting virulence or symptoms of infection, hence, giving rise to the term ‘latent infections’. Vaccines for Latent Viral Infections is a clear and concise monograph which features a review of some well-known viruses that are capable of establishing latent infections in humans. These include herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).The book also highlights common features of each of these viruses and demonstrates how they are able to evade the host’s immune response. This brief monograph finally proposes a much needed shift in the approach to designing vaccines that will prevent establishment of virus latency. Vaccines for Latent Viral Infections serves as a handy reference for researchers interested in the basic virology of viruses capable of latent infections, the immune responses to these infections and the development of vaccines to tackle these pathogens.

Book excerpt: From two of the world’s leading authorities on dogs, an imaginative journey into a future of dogs without people What would happen to dogs if humans simply disappeared? Would dogs be able to survive on their own without us? A Dog’s World imagines a posthuman future for dogs, revealing how dogs would survive—and possibly even thrive—and explaining how this new and revolutionary perspective can guide how we interact with dogs now. Drawing on biology, ecology, and the latest findings on the lives and behavior of dogs and their wild relatives, Jessica Pierce and Marc Bekoff—two of today’s most innovative thinkers about dogs—explore who dogs might become without direct human intervention into breeding, arranged playdates at the dog park, regular feedings, and veterinary care. Pierce and Bekoff show how dogs are quick learners who are highly adaptable and opportunistic, and they offer compelling evidence that dogs already do survive on their own—and could do so in a world without us. Challenging the notion that dogs would be helpless without their human counterparts, A Dog’s World enables us to understand these independent and remarkably intelligent animals on their own terms.

Sander Burrows is a wolf with a broken spirit. During thirty-five years away from home and pack, he made a life for himself among the humans. Now, tragedy and a sense of failure drive him home into the arms of his loving family. Aurora “Rory” Hanson hates Sander almost as much as she loves him. Humiliated at seventeen when he stood her up at the annual spring dance, she has since lived a life of relative solitude on the fringes of the pack. When Sander catches sight and scent of Rory, feelings run hot. His wolf recognizes his mate and he’ll do just about anything to overcome Rory’s dislike of him. Even accept the assistance of four interfering busybodies. The matrons want the old spring dance revived and what better way to “help” two fated wolves to happiness than to force Rory and Sander to work together on the organizing committee. Finding love doesn’t get any easier even for wolves in their fifties. Misunderstandings, old hurts, and the sharp edge of Miss Kathy’s tongue must all be overcome if two old friends are to achieve true happiness.

Defined as a pleasurable mental state that emerges during the reception of texts and artefacts, it amounts to the reader's or viewer's sense of having entered the represented world while at the same time keeping a distance from it. Aesthetic Illusion in Literature and the Arts is an in-depth study of the main questions surrounding this experience of art as reality. Beginning with an introduction providing historical background to modern discussions of illusion, it deals with a wide range of theoretical issues. The collection explores the nature and function of the aesthetic illusion as well as the role of affect and emotion, the implications of aesthetic illusion for the theory of fiction, the variable forms of aesthetic illusion and its relationship to other components of aesthetic response. Aesthetic Illusion in Literature and the Arts brings together a team of scholars from philosophy, literature and art and presents an interdisciplinary examination of a concept lying at the heart of contemporary aesthetics.
