Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 30 years, celebrated sports journalist Bob Hammel has reported on a variety of games and athletes–the Olympics, Pan American Games, 23 NCAA Final Fours, Major League Baseball playoffs and World Series, college football bowl games, Muhammad Ali's last championship victory, and dozens of Indiana high school basketball Final Fours. In all that time, however, he's never written much about himself–ntil now. In Last Press Bus Out of Middletown, Bob tells the story of how an Indiana sports journalist without a college degree, armed with talent, gumption, and a whole lot of inspiration and advice from those he worked with, earned national attention while still working for his small-town newspaper. From Bob Knight to Mark Spitz, from the horrors of the Munich Olympics tragedy to the Hoosiers' exhilarating clinching of the NCAA basketball championship, Bob Hammel's journey has been unforgettable. Even in his 80s, it's a dream that still has him smiling and storytelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We All Wrote on the Same Outhouse Walls is a warm-hearted very humorous book about the many joys and few sorrows of growing up during the 40s and 50s in a small town exiled in the Appalachian foothills. The book is about the author's small hometown which The Wall Street Journal described as "Intact but decaying: pure 19th Century." The Journal suggested that the town could be "On the scale of Williamsburg," but the town folks "Don't want to be preserved, saved or otherwise bothered by outsiders, no matter how good their intentions." This priceless narrative tells about first grade in a one-room schoolhouse called Possum Hollow, a splendid misspent youth, and a homespun education which was acquired while working in a country story and hanging out in a poolroom. The hilarious description of an endangered time and place is about colorful and unforgettable characters. It tells memorable stories and folklore which began with "I mind the time," and ended somewhat in borderline disbelief, but always in laughter. It's about nicknames, front porches, and coon dog field trials after church. And it's' about the down-home wit, sayings and opinions that made the personalities and their town so engaging. The book also tells what the old timers, the orthopedic set, would tell you, whether asked or not, about the 60s movement, the break-up of the traditional family, the present day media, and the theory of victimization. Their opinions, today, would be unfashionable to some, but refreshingly politically inappropriate to others. Not that the author's small hometown was perfect or blameless. The good old fashioned behavior by some of getting drunk on Saturday night and going to church on Sunday was alive and well. The town has its assortment of saints and sinners. But when it came to values and time-honored beliefs which now seem out-dated, back then small towns had them. maybe that's what one of John Steinbeck's characters in Mice and Men pointed out when the character commented, "There's nothing wrong anymore." We All Wrote on the Same Outhouse Walls is a must read for all of you who will enjoy a nostalgic visit back to your youth or your small hometown. It will bring back happy memories of a better time and make you glad that you were there. The book is also a must read for young readers who wonder what it was really like, and if they really were "the good old days." Most of all the book is for those of you who just want a good laugh.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... scrupulous, fair-minded and richly-detailed study... the book charts one of the most remarkable intellectual careers of the 20th century's latter half.... What is most heartening about Mr. Alexander's biography is its exemplary civility and nuance in discussing ideas across the lines of political difference." -- Nathan Glick, Washington Times "Anyone interested in Howe's varied career, and the historical context that has given it its particular shape -- American radicalism, the Cold War and anticommunism, the New Left, literary modernism, Jewish life -- will profit handsomely from reading Alexander's respectful book." -- Wilson Quarterly "Edward Alexander's captivating study of Irving Howe is illuminating andscrupulous; it is also temperate, generous, and deeply fair-minded. IfHowe were alive, he would thank the author -- and even now, in Paradise, heis surely doing so (while hotly continuing the discussion)."Â -- Cynthia Ozick "... a singular achievement." -- Jerusalem Post "... a masterpiece" -- National Jewish Post and Opinion "... meticulous scholarship, felicitous writing style and a literate feistiness." -- Chicago Jewish Star "An excellent work of insight and criticism, recommended for academic libraries." -- Library Journal "An insightful, balanced contribution..." -- Booklist "Edward Alexander's estimable intellectual biography... studiously avoids both undue sentimentality and overly harsh censure." -- Sanford Pinsker, Philadelphia Inquirer "Edward Alexander's well-informed and engaging portrait of Irving Howe does full justice to the complexities of mind and the political passions of one of this country's leading intellectuals. This bracing, perceptive study honors Howe's admirable career by treating it with the same high degree of moral seriousness that characterized Howe's own work at its best." -- Alvin H. Rosenfeld Irving Howe, author of World of Our Fathers, the prize-winning history of American Jewish immigrant culture, and founding editor of the influential magazine Dissent, was for over 50 years a dominant -- and controversial -- figure in American intellectual life. Through a clear and eloquent study of Howe's politics, writings, and thought, Edward Alexander constructs a sympathetic yet critical intellectual biography of this complex individual.
