Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Nonlinear Laser Spectroscopy, Revised Edition presents the most useful nonlinear spectroscopy techniques at a level accessible to spectroscopists and graduate students unfamiliar with nonlinear optics. This book discusses the principles of nonlinear laser spectroscopy. Organized into seven chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the stimulated Raman effect and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy, which can be used in a varied way to generate radiation in the ultraviolet and vacuum-ultraviolet areas. This text then explains the exciting possibilities started by saturated absorption and related techniques, including improved spectroscopic precision, studies of collisional dynamics, and better measurements of fundamental constants and of basic units. Other chapters examine Hamiltonian relaxation, which describes all of the processes that return the ensemble to thermal equilibrium. The final chapter deals with the method of infrared spectrophotography, which combines efficient detection, time resolution, and coherent infrared. Spectroscopists and graduate students will find this book extremely useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fritz Haber Symposium on Methods of Laser Spectroscopy was held in Ein Bokek, Israel, on the shores of the Dead Sea, on December 16-20, 1985. The location is the lowest place on earth, 392 meters below sea level. It was hoped that 120 active laser scientists, so lowly trapped in such a place, with the nearest entertainment 100 km away, will have no choice but to discuss laser spectroscopy. On the average, the Dead Sea area receives 3-4 days of rain each year, and this year these days all occurred during the conference. This did not mean the cancellation of the hikes, although the trip to Massada was conducted in the rain. The unexpected rains also caused flash floods in the area, and Ein Bokek was completely cut-off on Thursday night. The archeologist scheduled to speak after dinner, and the belly dancer scheduled to appear afterwards, (~ould not arrive, resulting in the only serious deviation from the original plan. The scientific program consisted of invited talks and contributed posters. The emphasis in selection of invited speakers and topics was on the methods rather than specific molecular systems, and an attempt was made to allow ample time for discussion after each lecture. The same philosophy guided us in editing this book, and authors were requested to write manuscripts longer than usual for standard conference proceedings.

Book excerpt: The Fourth International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy (FICOLS) was held in the Hotel Oberfahrt in Rottach-Egern, Tegernsee, June 11-15, 1979. Rottach-Egern is a well-known health resort situated on the southern end of Lake Tegernsee. As with the previous laser spectroscopy conferences in Vail, Megeve, and Jackson, the purpose of FICOLS was to provide ~n informal setting where an international group of scientists active in laser spectroscopy could discuss current problems and developments in the field. The program consisted essen tially of invited lectures with appropriate time provided for the latest postdeadline results. The conference was attended by 340 scientists representing 25 countries: Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada,- Peoples Re public of China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany (FRG), Germany (GDR), Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Nether lands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, U.S.k,, U.S.S.R., and Yugoslavia. Unfortunately five of our colleagues from Japan who planned to attend the meeting could not come due to an interruption of airline schedules, Their absence was a distinct loss to the conference. However, their papers will be published in one of the forthcoming issues of the journal Applied Physics. Numerous people have contributed to making the conference a success. Especially we would like to thank the members of the steering committee for their advice concerning the program.

Book excerpt: Optical nonlinear degenerate four-wave mixing (D4WM) spectroscopy is a presented as an ultrasensitive method for characterizing ad quantifying low abundance molecules, such as, chemical and biological agents, carcinogenic compounds, and biomarker protein in complex biological/environmental systems. This is achieved through refractive index change within an absorbing medium, which produces a laser-like signal beam. This signal has high spatial resolution, and may be collected with high efficiency against a nearly 100% dark background. The cubic dependence on laser power and square dependence on analyte concentration allow for high signal intensity in trace analysis applications. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate optical degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) as an effective optical tool for standoff/surface detection of explosives, as well an ultrasensitive tool for detection of carcinogenic pollutants and disease markers. Standoff/surface detection of is of great interest in these times of active terrorism. Optical techniques remain the most promising approach for standoff/surface detection of trace residues on surfaces. Laser-based approaches, such as LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy), Raman Spectroscopy or CARS (Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy), and LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) are amongst a variety of optical techniques that have shown great potentials for standoff/surface detection of explosives. However, the determination of analytes depends on the measurement of scattered light and functional groups above background noise which can be difficult. DFWM on the other end is a coherent laser-like signal which can be measured with almost 100% efficiency over background noise and does depend on the measurement of functional groups, giving rise to higher sensitivity and specificity. D4WM is employed as the main detector coupled to high-throughput (1D or 2D) separation methods for the determination and quantitation of environmental toxicants, colorectal protein marker conjugated to a chromophore, metabolomic studies of mouse heart Secretome, and surface detection of explosives. This study demonstrates the applicability of field-deployable D4WM instrumentation for use at port of entries. The first to be verified by 3rd party scientist from John Hopkins University.

Book excerpt: The thrust of this project is to develop and apply new methodologies based on nonlinear optics to the study of biological macromolecules and membranes. In the period covered by this report we developed several biochemical experimental systems to which the spectroscopic techniques are being applied. The biological problems addressed include: a. Age related modifications in enzyme catalysis. 2. Mechanisms of control of membrane-bound transport proteins. The spectroscopic studies involved two primary sets of measurements based on backward nearly degenerate four-wave mixing and employing both time domain and frequency domain and frequency domain measurements. A CW dye laser system using cross-correlated optical fields was applied to measure relaxation rates of nonradiating states like nonphosphorescent triplet states and is being adapted for studies of biological systems. A laboratory for ultrafast time-domain measurements is being developed to study enzyme and membrane mechanisms. A system based on phase conjugate optics designed to eliminate the effects of light scattering in optical spectroscopy studies of biological membrane systems is being adapted for studies of biological systems. A laboratory for ultrafast time-domain measurements is being developed to study enzyme and membrane mechanisms. A system based on phase conjugate optics designed to eliminate the effects of light scattering in optical spectroscopy studies of biological membrane systems is being tested.
