Book excerpt: The large scale structure and mixing characteristics of the flowfield surrounding a single, underexpanded, sonic, transverse jet injected into a Mach 1.6 crossflow were experimentally studied. The flowfield was investigated at three distinct sets of flow conditions corresponding to a jet-to-crossflow momentum flux ratio of 1.2, 1.7, and 2.2. Planar laser-induced fluorescence from acetone molecules and planar Mie scattering from condensed ethanol droplets were used to obtain spatially and temporally resolved flowfield visualizations in various side, end, and top view image planes. Statistical processing of the image ensembles produced mean and standard deviation images, two-dimensional spatial autocovariance fields representing the characteristics of the dominant turbulent structures, and probability density functions representing the instantaneous state of scalar mixing in the flowfield. Time-averaged descriptions of the mixing characteristics of this transverse jet flowfield were shown to be inaccurate. Intermittent large scale structures of various sizes, shapes, and orientations strongly influence the distribution of the jet fluid and the crossflow fluid. Relatively high probabilities of unmixed fluid (whether jet or crossflow) persist in many of the mixing regions between the jet and crossflow. The most significant instantaneous mixing in this flowfield seems to occur in the center of wake region slightly below the jet centerline. A counter-rotating streamwise vortex pair in the jet cross section plays an important role in the scalar mixing processes, as it transports jet fluid down towards the wake and entrains crossflow fluid from below up into the jet. The streamwise vortex pair initially develops in an asymmetric and undulating manner, but gradually becomes more symmetric farther downstream of the Mach disk. A relatively large portion of the total jet fluid bypasses the Mach disk through the upstream edge of the barrel shock, thereby retaining a significant fraction of its momentum. This relatively high momentum jet fluid penetrates deeply into the crossflow, contributes to the formation of the largest turbulent structures, and affects the evolution of the streamwise vortex pair.

Book excerpt: The design of a supersonic combustor which uses transverse jet injection into a supersonic flow (TJISF) as a means of fuel injection and mixing requires a fundamental understanding of these flows. Such knowledge may also serve studies of the thrust vector control of rocket nozzles, the cooling of nozzle walls, and jet reaction force prediction. The present investigation is a quantitative, experimental study of a single, sonic, underexpanded, transverse jet injected into a Mach 1.6 crossflow. The motivation for this research program is to improve the fundamental understanding of the fluid dynamic mechanisms and mixing processes in this flow. Schlieren/shadowgraph photography, surface flow visualization, and two-component, frequency pre-shifted laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) data have been obtained. Four LDV optical arrangements have been used to measure all three mean velocity components, five of the six kinematic Reynolds stresses, and the turbulent kinetic energy. The LDV system is equipped with a computer-controlled traverse system and has been used to provide velocity measurements at over 4,000 locations throughout the TJISF flowfield. The study focuses on the transverse, midline plane and two crossflow planes. The majority of the measurements in these planes has been made in the high gradient regions of the jet plume. Measurements of the mean and turbulent velocity fields helped resolve important issues in the study of the TJISF flowfield. These issues include the size and orientation of the recirculation regions upstream and downstream of the jet (including the horseshoe vortex just upstream of the jet); the structure and strength of the bow shock, barrel shock, and Mach disk; the structure, strength, and development of the kidney-shaped, counter-rotating vortex pair; the growth of the annular shear layer between the jet plume and the crossflow; the growth of the boundary layer beneath the jet plume; the Reynolds stress fields of the flow; the production of turbulent kinetic energy; and the degree of anisotropy of the turbulent stresses in this flow. In addition, the present study provides validation data for analytical and numerical predictions of the TJISF flowfield.

Book excerpt: The next generation air breathing engine that would enable an alternative to conventional air travel or suborbital flight is the supersonic ramjet engine (SCRAM) which requires a highly accelerated rate of fuel mixing and combustion. For this type of engine, one of the improvement opportunities lies in the injection of the fuel into the supersonic flow inside the combustor. In order to determine the flow field that develops when a sonic jet of secondary gas is injected into a supersonic free stream, a dedicated test section was developed which was attached to the existing supersonic wind tunnel at the University of Central Florida. A Schlieren system was developed to visualize the associated flow fields and to provide a tool for future high-speed aerodynamic research. Mixing of a cross flow jet with a supersonic free stream is a topic of interest in the field of hypersonic air travel. In addition to a description and analysis of the resultant data, this thesis also serves as a reference for future research and work done with the UCF supersonic wind tunnel and the Schlieren system. The results agree with the literature, and the Schlieren images obtained show the associated shock and flow structures that are expected with a jet in cross flow.
