This term paper examines if the invention of the Internet triggered a language revolution and if a new English has evolved. In order to analyze the language of the Internet, it is necessary to provide a basic framework which is subject to the first chapter. Chapter one provides background information on the concept of language variation and explains important features of language variety. Dealing with language variety is crucial since the subsequent analysis aims to identify if a language variety has evolved. The second chapter deals with the definition and limitation of existing Internet situations which will be separately analyzed in chapter four. The subsequent chapter is concerned with the concept of Netspeak which was initially introduced by the linguist David Crystal. Besides the determination of Netspeak, chapter three also differentiates written and spoken language, in order to analyze whether Netspeak can be considered either spoken or written language. Furthermore, main linguistic features of Netspeak will be examined in order to compare them with each Internet situation. This procedure enables to answeri the question whether the “language of the Internet” can be considered homogenous or whether each situation applies different linguistic features. Chapter four comprises a detailed analysis of the Internet situations e-mail, chatgroups, virtual worlds and World Wide Web. In the course of this chapter, each situation will be examined according to unique linguistic features to find out if a new language variety has emerged. Additionally, special attention is given to linguistic features of Netspeak to clarify if the language of the Internet can be considered a homogenous language or a language which differs from situation to situation.

Book excerpt: Traditional dialects have been encroached upon by the increasing mobility of their speakers and by the onslaught of national languages in education and mass media. Typically, older dialects are “leveling” to become more like national languages. This is regrettable when the last articulate traces of a culture are lost, but it also promotes a complex dynamics of interaction as speakers shift from dialect to standard and to intermediate compromises between the two in their forms of speech. Varieties of speech thus live on in modern communities, where they still function to mark provenance, but increasingly cultural and social provenance as opposed to pure geography. They arise at times from the need to function throughout the different groups in society, but they also may have roots in immigrants’ speech, and just as certainly from the ineluctable dynamics of groups wishing to express their identity to themselves and to the world. The future of dialects is a selection of the papers presented at Methods in Dialectology XV, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, 11-15 August 2014. Book excerpt: This monograph takes up recent advances in social network methods in sociology, together with data on economic segregation, in order to build a quantitative analysis of the class and network effects implicated in vowel change in a Southern American city. Studies of sociolinguistic variation in urban spaces have uncovered durable patterns of linguistic difference, such as the maintenance of blue collar/white collar distinctions in the case of stable linguistic variables. But the underlying interactional origins of these patterns, and the interactional reasons for their durability, are not well understood, due in part to the near-absence of large-scale network investigation. This book undertakes a sociolinguistic network analysis of data from the Raleigh corpus, a set of conversational interviews collected form natives of Raleigh, North Carolina, from 2008-2017. Acoustic analysis of the corpus shows the rapid, ongoing retreat from the Southern Vowel Shift and increasing participation in national vowel changes. The social distribution of these trends is explored via standard social factors such as occupation as well as innovative network variables, including a measure of nestedness in the community network. The book aims to pursue new network-based questions about sociolinguistic variation that can be applied to other corpora, making this key reading for students and researchers in sociolinguistics and historical linguistics as well as those interested in further understanding how existing quantitative network methods from sociological research might be applied to sociolinguistic data.

This volume approaches the ‘life cycle’ of linguistic variability in English using data sources that range from electronic corpora to the internet. In the spirit of the 1968 Weinreich, Labov and Herzog classic, the fifteen contributions divide into three sections, each highlighting different stages in the dynamics of English across time and space. They show, first, how increase in variability can be initiated by processes that give rise to new patterns of discourse, which can ultimately crystallize into new grammatical elements. The next phase is the spread of linguistic features and patterns of discourse, both new and well established, through the social and regional varieties of English. The final phase in this ebb and flow of linguistic variability consists of processes promoting some variable features over others across registers and regional and social varieties, thus resulting in reduced variation and increased linguistic homogeneity.
