Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine attitudes towards Turkish-German language mixing. Lambert (1967), Lippi-Green (1997) and Preston (2010) have shown that stereotypes about groups of people can be expressed through attitudes about speakers' use of language. This study investigates attitudes regarding the use of Turkish-German code-mixing through a survey including clips from two popular films by the director Fatih Akin. The dissertation presents the results of two studies conducted on the responses to an online survey. The survey was given to native German-, Turkish-, and/or English-speakers. The survey was made up of two parts: 1) demographic and language background questions, and 2) a series of short video clips followed by Likert-scale questions about the characters and open-ended questions about the clips. The first study involved a qualitative analysis of responses to the survey. This consisted of a content analysis of the answers to open-ended questions in the survey, divided according to respondent group, with a concentration on evaluative comments regarding language use. The purpose of the analysis was to determine which types of evaluative comments are made about Turkish-German mixing and how the types of comments differ between groups of participants. Results indicate that, while monolingual Germans and Turks did submit negative evaluations of mixing, the overwhelming majority of negative comments about Turkish-German mixing came from native bilinguals. The second study consisted of a quantitative analysis of Likert-style questions about the film characters on a range of attributes. The results show that German-speakers, Turkish-speakers, and Turkish-German bilinguals all display a negative correlation between their perceptions of a character's "Turkishness" and perceived level of education, which is not evident in the responses of participants who are unfamiliar with German and Turkish. These results are explored in relationship to the language background as well as the age group of the participants. In addition, two smaller studies were conducted on the dialogue in the film clips that serve as stimuli for the survey. First, a linguistic analysis was conducted on the speech of Turkish-Germans in the clips that were presented as stimuli in the online survey. The analysis compared their speech to the descriptions of Turkish-German speech in previous literature. Second, a conversation-analytic discourse analysis was performed on the dialogue of the film clips used in the survey. The purpose of both of these studies was to better understand what it is that respondents to the survey might react to in forming opinions of the characters.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject German Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Würzburg, language: English, abstract: In this study the author will focus on the second generation, their children, who were all born and raised in Germany, to see if the influence of the Turkish culture through their parents and the influence of the German culture which they were born into, has an effect on their pronunciation in their parent’s language. Another observation that inspired this research is the following. Native Turkish speakers living in Turkey are usually quick in realizing whether or not a person is a bilingual German-Turkish person because of the way German-Turkish people use long and short vowels. The Turkish language does not have as many long vowels as the German language. Her prediction is that by being German-dominant speakers and thus being used to a stress-timed language the German-Turkish speakers will have trouble producing the right duration of vowels in Turkish. In the research the author does not only want to analyze the way German-dominant bilingual speakers of Turkish produce vowels but also see if there is any correlation between the way they see themselves in regard to the Turkish language and culture. Other researchers have also laid their focus on the concern for pronunciation accuracy or the desire to sound native-like but as afore mentioned the focus will be on the attitude towards the language and culture. Because there is hardly one dominant opinion about the influence of attitude towards the production of a language, she also hopes to help to further understand this relationship. This will also be interesting when projected to language acquisition in general. Can people who have a better attitude towards the language and culture of their target language acquire said language more easily? Can the heritage language and the dominant culture in which the learners live hinder or further the language acquisition?

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Hamburg, course: The Structure of English- Linguistik Vertiefung, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the process of third language acquisition by Turkish immigrants in Germany. This process is unique and distinct from their first and second language acquisition, as it is influenced by first and second language acquisition. Cultural diversity in different societies around the world, in the 21st century, places a great emphasis on the value of language acquisition. Whether it is in business, politics or other international interactions, and further aspects of life, in particular education, language acquisition has become more and more important. As a result, bilingualism is seen as a norm rather than an exception in many societies around the globe. Although considered fairly recent, linguistics have studied the acquisition of a first language by infants and second language acquisition in children and adults with varying approaches in the past decades. However, people are not only increasingly exposed to numerous languages in multilingual settings but they are also learning them. This is ascribed to the movement of people from one society to another resulting in an increased contact with different cultures. Due to that fact, researchers have begun to put an emphasis on studies about multilingualism and the distinct acquisition of languages past a second non-native language. While many researchers classified any non-native language acquisition as second language acquisition in the past, recent studies discuss the phenomenon of third language acquisition. In this day and age it has become common that migrants who are proficient in their native language and have moved to or are born in a multicultural country will not only learn the official language of that same country but also an additional foreign language. Because of t

A substantial sample of both written and spoken data collected from Turkish-German bilingual students in Hamburg, Germany formed the data and the analyses were carried out within the theories of Third Language Acquisition and Functional Pragmatics. Analysis revealed that the subjects have difficulty acquiring the rigid SVO word order of English and disregarding their native language knowledge of Turkish, they tend to apply word order rules of German, that are thought to be motivated from the pragmatic needs of the learners.

Book excerpt: Over the past twenty-five years Turkish-German films have emerged and achieved prominence among German cinema. Tevfik Baser's 1986 film 40 Quadratmeter Deutschland paved the way and inspired many of today's successful and diverse Turkish-German directors. Recent research on Turkish-German cinema has been primarily concentrated on the representation of Turkish and bi-national identity issues in German society. However, another angle that will be examined is the representation of non-minority Germans and the role of the German and Turkish language. The analysis will be focused on films by Fatih Akin and Thomas Arslan, who have had a significant impact in Turkish-German cinema.

Book excerpt: The Turkish language in diaspora is in process of change due to different language constellations of immigrants and the dominance of majority languages. This led to a great interest in various research areas, particularly in linguistics. Against this background, this study focuses on developmental change in the use of adverbial clause-combining constructions in Turkish-German bilingual students' oral and written text production. It illustrates the use of non-finite constructions and some unique alternative strategies to express adverbial relations with authentic examples in Turkish and German. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how bilingual competencies vary in expressing adverbial relations depending on language contact and extra-linguistic factors. Dr. Seda Yilmaz Wörfel completed a Ph.D. in German linguistics at the University of Potsdam, Germany. She works as a research associate at the Mercator-Institute for Literacy and Language Education at the University of Cologne. Her research interests are Turkish-German Bilingualism, Second Language Acquisition, Multiliteracy and Language Contact.

Book excerpt: Since the 1960ies, Germany has been host to a large Turkish immigrant community. While migrant communities often shift to the majority language over the course of time, Turkish is a very vital minority language in Germany and bilingualism in this community is an obvious fact which has been subject to several studies. The main focus usually is on German, the second language (L2) of these speakers (e.g. Hinnenkamp 2000, Keim 2001, Auer 2003, Cindark & Aslan (2004), Kern & Selting 2006, Selting 2009, Kern 2013). Research on the Turkish spoken by Turkish bilinguals has also attracted attention although to a lesser extend mainly in the framework of so called heritage language research (cf. Polinski 2011). Bilingual Turkish has been investigated under the perspective of code-switching and codemixing (e.g. Kallmeyer & Keim 2003, Keim 2003, 2004, Keim & Cindark 2003, Hinnenkamp 2003, 2005, 2008, Dirim & Auer 2004), and with respect to changes in the morphologic, the syntactic and the orthographic system (e.g. Rehbein & Karakoç 2004, Schroeder 2007). Attention to the changes in the prosodic system of bilingual Turkish on the other side has been exceptional so far (Queen 2001, 2006). [...].

Book excerpt: Compared to other languages Turkish is considered to have a low vitality within the Australian community. However, many Turkish background students study Turkish as a VCE subject. I wanted to explore the reasons why these students had chosen Turkish as a VCE subject. Therefore, I tried to investigate the attitudes and beliefs about Turkish of Years ll-12 Turkish background students studying Turkish as a VCE subject in Melbourne as well as their language usage of English and Turkish and their self-ratings for English and Turkish. I distributed questionnaires to 87 informants and I conducted an in-depth interview with three of their teachers contextualise the responses of the students. I conducted this research in three schools; two independent and one after hours ethnic school. There was a significant difference by school type in emotional commitment to Turkish. The informants identified themselves as proficient in both languages. Nevertheless their personal commitment to the Turkish language varied according to the school that they attended. As a result, although the Turkish language has a low vitality in the Australian community it can be seen that these informants do have a high personal commitment to the Turkish language. Moreover, the informants' personal commitment to the Turkish language doesn't depend on their command of the Turkish language.

Book excerpt: Turkish German comedy culture and the lived realities of Turkish Muslims in Germany Comedy entertainment is a powerful arena for serious public engagement with questions of German national identity and Turkish German migration. The German majority society and its largest labour migrant community have been asking for decades what it means to be German and what it means for Turkish Germans, Muslims of the second and third generations, to call Germany their home. Benjamin Nickl examines through the social pragmatics of humour the dynamics that underpin these questions in the still-evolving popular culture space of German mainstream humour in the 21st century. The first book-length study on the topic to combine close readings of film, television, literary and online comedy, and transnational culture studies, Turkish German Muslims and Comedy Entertainment presents the argument that Turkish German humour has moved from margin to mainstream by intervening in cultural incompatibility and Islamophobia discourse.
