It has specifically been looked into the relationship between the restriction of Saarländisch in the classroom and students experiencing language anxiety in the context of a primary school located in a rural area in the German federal state Saarland. In this area, the language variety Saarländisch is commonly not accepted within the classroom. This thesis comprises an empirical study which has been analysed in a mix-method using both qualitative and quantitative data. The sample group consisted of 20 students in grade 4 who have been picked after answering a background questionnaire and who were then given the main questionnaire related to how Saarländisch is viewed in the classroom, the restriction of Saarländisch in school and language anxiety. Furthermore, the two teachers who teach the aforementioned students have been questioned in interviews. It has been investigated that Saarländisch is seen as inferior to Standard German both in general and within the classroom. Even though, the restriction of Saarländisch in the classroom and students’ language anxiety have been found to not have a statistically significant correlation with each other, some qualitatively and quantitatively obtained data indicated a relation between the two variables. Therefore, the definition of language anxiety should be rethought and extended referring to learning and/or using different language varieties rather than only referring to the anxiety that appears when learning and/or using a second/foreign language.

Translations barely penetrate the meaning of the word, which has provided the emotional and ideological common ground for a variety of associations and individuals devoted to the cause of local preservation. Celia Applegate examines at both the national and regional levels the cultural meaning of Heimat and why it may be pivotal to the troubled and very timely question of German identity. The ideas and activities clustered around Heimat shed new light particularly on problems of modernization. Instead of viewing the Germans as a dangerously anti-modern people, Applegate argues that they used the cultivation of Heimat to ground an abstract nationalism in their attachment to familiar places and to reconcile the modern industrial and urban world with the rural landscapes and customs they admired. Primarily a characteristic of the middle classes, love of Heimat constituted an alternative vision of German unity to the familiar aggressive, militaristic one. The Heimat vision of Germany emphasized cultural diversity and defined German identity by its internal members rather than its external enemies. Applegate asks that we re-examine the continuities of German history from the perspective of the local places that made up Germany, rather than from that of prominent intellectuals or national policymakers. The local patriotism of Heimat activists emerges as an element of German culture that persisted across the great divides of 1918, 1933, and 1945. She also suggests that this attachment to a particular place is a feature of Europeans in general and is deserving of further attention. A total of one hundred (100) responds constitute the population of the study. The data collected were subjected to a statistical analysis using mean, percentage and standard deviation formula. The findings revealed that Arts and Literary Festivals for Secondary Schools if utilized has capacity to become a breeding and growth ground for raw creative talents that would contribute immensely to the development stride of Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that Festivals like that should be supported by all and sundry.
