Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voices project of the British Broadcasting Corporation, a recent high-profile media investigation, gathered contemporary English dialect samples from all over the UK and invited contributions from the public to a dedicated website. This book explores both issues of ideology and representation behind the media project and uses to which the emerging data can be put in the study of language variation and change. Two lead-in chapters, written from the complementary perspectives of a broadcast media specialist, Simon Elmes, and an academic linguist, David Crystal, set the project in the BBC’s historical, social, and linguistic contexts. Following these, authorities in a range of specialisms concerned with uses and representations of language varieties address various aspects of the project’s potential, in three broad sections: Linguistic explorations of the representations of language and the debates on language evoked by the data. The linguistic product of the project, including lexical, phonological, and grammatical investigations. Technical aspects of creating maps from the large electronic Voices database. An interactive companion website provides the means to access, explore, and make use of raw linguistic data, along with interpretive maps created from it, all accompanied by full explanations. Analysing 21st Century British English brings together key research and is essential reading for advanced undergraduate students, postgraduate students and researchers working in the areas of language variation, dialect and sociolinguistics. Contributors: David Crystal, Bethan Davies, Susie Dent, Simon Elmes, Holly Gilbert, Jon Herring, John Holliday, Alexandra Jaffe, Tommaso Milani, Rob Penhallurick, Jonnie Robinson, Mooniq Shaikjee, Ann Thompson, Will Turner, Clive Upton, Martijn Wieling.

Book excerpt: The acquisition and use of language are just as vital to children’s learning when the newer classroom methods are being employed as ever they were when the more traditional approaches were being used. Child centred learning has increasingly influenced language use and language work in the classroom – mainly in the primary sector, but also in the teaching of English, and indirectly in the teaching of other subject areas including the sciences. Interest in school learning and the special language it requires, compared with the language demands of everyday life, have recently developed in answer to the concern about allocation of the time available within the school timetable for each subject-based learning experience. In this volume the author focuses mainly on the language of subject learning in the secondary schools. She looks critically at some current notions concerned with language and learning and examines their translation into classroom practice. She then develops a picture of the language demands made by other subject areas using collected language material and finally, in the light of this evidence, she attempts to identify the range of language in everyday use in schools, goes on to draw conclusions and then makes recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of self-instructional learning materials, presented through a wide range of media, was becoming an increasingly pervasive and important part of the educational scene at all levels, from infant school to university. Much had been written, both theoretical and practical, about various aspects of the techniques for developing such materials. However, one phase of the development process, while generally recognised to be critical in producing materials of high quality and educational effectiveness, had been relatively neglected in the literature. This is the phase of trying out the materials in draft form on students, collecting feedback and undertaking revision in the light of the ensuing data. Based on considerable practical experience, this book, originally published in 1980, examines the planning and executing of the collection of feedback from students, on self-instructional learning materials concerned with various subject-matters and presented through various media, both printed and audio-visual. A brief survey of the development of materials-based learning is provided in order to set the use of student feedback in context, and to sort out some of the terminology in common use. The main part of the book illustrates a step by step method through all the stages of the try-out process, from initial planning of the project to final revision of the materials. Thus a particular approach to the process of trying out draft materials is advocated, which is outlined by means of a case study. Finally, there is an examination of whether using student feedback to revise learning materials can actually improve their educational quality and effectiveness, with particular reference to the approach described earlier. Incorporating a full bibliography, this study combines a comprehensive review of what is known about this crucial phase of developing learning materials, with an original ‘how to do it' guide for practitioners which has itself been subject to extensive try-out.
