Book Synopsis Cultural Geographies by : John Horton
Download or read book Cultural Geographies written by John Horton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural geography is a major, vibrant subdiscipline of human geography. Cultural geographers have done some of the most important, exciting and thought-provokingly zesty work in human geography over the last half-century. This book exists to provide an introduction to the remarkably diverse, controversial, and sometimes-infuriating work of cultural geographers. The book outlines how cultural geography in its various forms provides a rich body of research about cultural practices and politics in diverse contexts. Cultural geography offers a major resource for exploring the importance of cultural materials, media, texts and representations in particular contexts and is one of the most theoretically adventurous subdisciplines within human geography, engaging with many important lines of social and cultural theory. The book has been designed to provide an accessible, wide-ranging and thought-provoking introduction for students studying cultural geography, or specific topics within this subdiscipline. Through a wide range of case studies and learning activities, it provides an engaging introduction to cultural geography.

Book Synopsis Terrorism, Risk and the City by : Jon Coaffee
Download or read book Terrorism, Risk and the City written by Jon Coaffee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of defensive strategies encompassing the fortification and privatization of the city has attracted significant attention during recent years, and has become particularly relevant in the aftermath of September 11th. Dealing with issues of risk, security and the spatial restructuring of contemporary western cities, this book examines how the perceived risk of terrorist attack led to changes in the physical form and institutional infrastructure of the city of London during the 1990s when the city was a prime terrorist target. The book analyses how the various formal and informal strategies adopted in the City attempted to reduce both the physical and financial risk of terrorism. This was undertaken through a series of place-specific security initiatives and risk management policies which led to increased fortification, a substantial rise in terrorism insurance premiums, and, changing institutional relations at a variety of spatial scales. It also argues that the security measures deployed were developed not in terms of an anti-terrorist effort, but in relation to the unintended by-products of these approaches such as crime reduction and enhanced traffic management capabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Humanities and Social Sciences, 7e prepares teachers to develop and implement programs in the humanities and social sciences learning area from F-10. It successfully blends theory with practical approaches to provide a basis for teaching that is engaging, inquiry-based and relevant to students’ lives. Using Version 8.1 of the Australian Curriculum, the text discusses the new structure of the humanities and social sciences learning area. Chapters on history, geography, civics and citizenship, and economics and business discuss the nature of these subjects and how to teach them to achieve the greatest benefit for students, both as sub-strands within the Year F-6/7 HASS subject and as distinct Year 7-10 subjects. Throughout, the book maintains its highly respected philosophical and practical orientation, including a commitment to deep learning in a context of critical inquiry. With the aid of this valuable text, teachers can assist primary, middle and secondary students to become active and informed citizens who contribute to a just, democratic and sustainable future.
