Book Synopsis Analytical Biogeography by : A.A. Myers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biogeography may be defined simply as the study of the geographical distribution of organisms, but this simple defmition hides the great complexity of the subject. Biogeography transcends classical subject areas and involves a range of scientific disciplines that includes geogra phy, geology and biology. Not surprisingly, therefore, it means rather different things to different people. Historically, the study of biogeogra phy has been concentrated into compartments at separate points along a spatio-temporal gradient. At one end of the gradient, ecological biogeography is concerned with ecological processes occurring over short temporal and small spatial scales, whilst at the other end, historical biogeography is concerned with evolutionary processes over millions of years on a large, often global scale. Between these end points lies a third major compartment concerned with the profound effects of Pleistocene glaciations and how these have affected the distribution of recent organisms. Within each of these compartments along the scale gradient, a large number of theories, hypotheses and models have been proposed in an attempt to explain the present and past biotic distribution patterns. To a large extent, these compartments of the subject have been non-interactive, which is understandable from the different interests and backgrounds of the various researchers. Nevertheless, the distribu tions of organisms across the globe cannot be fully understood without a knowledge of the full spectrum of ecological and historical processes. There are no degrees in biogeography and today' s biogeographers are primarily born out of some other discipline.

Book Synopsis The Ecology and Biogeography of Nothofagus Forests by : Thomas T. Veblen
Download or read book The Ecology and Biogeography of Nothofagus Forests written by Thomas T. Veblen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecologists and biogeographers have been intrigued for a long time by the striking similarity of the vegetation and flora of southern temperate zone regions separated by large oceans. These scientists have been particularly interested in the occurrence in these regions of Nothofagus--southern beeches. This book, which focuses on the distribution, history, and ecology of the genus Nothofagus, provides a key to understanding the historical plant geography and modern vegetation patterns of the southern hemisphere. The book begins with a discussion of the long-term and broad-scale patterns of origin and differentiation in the genus. Next each major Nothofagus biome is discussed, first in a chapter that considers contemporary ecological patterns and then in a chapter that focuses on the history and paleoecology of the region. Authorities in the field deal with the temperate zone of the southwest Pacific region (New Zealand and Australia); the adjacent tropical zone of the southwest Pacific (New Guinea and New Caledonia); and South America, ranging from the Mediterranean-type climate region of central Chile to the subantarctic latitudes of Tierra del Fuego.

Throughout the volume, Young, the author of several books and essays about history and the environment, emphasises conservation's cultural origins. The text is beautifully illustrated with photographs of exotic flora and fauna, sketches, and portraits of conservation leaders.

Book Synopsis Natural Grasslands by : Robert T. Coupland
Download or read book Natural Grasslands written by Robert T. Coupland and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1993 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. This volume is concerned with those parts of the earth's surface where semiarid to subhumid climate determines that the potential vegetation is characterized by a more or less continuous layer of grasses and other associated herbs. These grasslands have been modified to a very considerable degree by the activities of man and his domesticated animals. The authors of the various chapters have evaluated the effect of these stresses in modifying ecosystem structure and activities of organisms. The book provides an intensively referenced and indexed synthesis and review of knowledge concerning the natural grasslands of the world in as uniform a style as possible. Because of its length, it is published in two parts. The first part deals with the grasslands of the Western Hemisphere, and the Eastern Hemisphere and the resume compose this second volume.
