Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landmarks of Steuben County, New York In the preparation of this historical and biographical record earlier works bearing on the history. Of this section of the State have been consulted, and also many original sources of information. A careful review of the work, from beginning to end, discloses the fact that more than two thousand persons have been interviewed in the quest of authentic data, hence it cannot be assumed that the present volume is a mere compilation from previous publications. The work is now placed before the people of the county, and the editor, writers and pub lishers have no apology to make, believing none is needed. At the same time they have not the temerity to claim this to be a faultless volume, but assert for it reasonable and substantial accuracy. The arrangement of the subject of the county's history will be found novel, yet convenient and interesting. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Landmark History, of New York, Also the Origin of Street Names, and a Bibliography In a city like New York, governed by a spirit of tearing down and rebuilding at short intervals of time, it is not surprising that landmarks have been destroyed and that old places have been in danger of losing their historical associations. Fortunately, of late, through the worthy efforts of certain patriotic societies, many of the more important historic sites have been determined and marked by suitably inscribed tablets. These memorials serve the double purpose of awakening attention and of investing with an air of reality the events they perpetuate. They are, however, but isolated mementos, bearing a suggestive phrase or two that have a meaning only to the student who has delved into the city's past. To make clear the full significance of these tablet-marked sites, to visit them in their chronological order, together with other landmarks worthy of consideration, and to weave around these relics and reminders of other days an interesting, graphic, and precise story, has been the object of this little work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after the Civil War, the 121st New York Volunteers (Upton's Regulars) finally published a history of their regiment. Its stated author was a man who had not served directly with the 121st but had based the book on a memoir written by a survivor who had enlisted at age 15. That boy, Dewitt Clinton Beckwith, published his memoir thirty years after the war in an obscure upstate New York newspaper, The Hekrimer Democrat. For years, the "origin story" lay hidden in plain sight, until editor Salvatore Cilella discovered it while researching for a regimental history. The original 53 weekly installments, edited and annotated here, richly detail the horrors and folly of war. They reveal the slow maturation of a boy thrust into almost four years of war. Beckwith was present at nearly all the historic Eastern Theater engagements from Antietam to Appomattox, including an abortive stint with the 91st New York in Florida in 1861. He describes his various Tom Sawyer-like adventures with the VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac, dealing with death, disease, loss and ultimate elation at Lee's surrender, tempered only by Abraham Lincoln's death.

Book excerpt: Strong (history of Christianity, Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC) tells the little known story of ecclesiastical abolitionism, an important movement during the antebellum period. It involved radical evangelical Protestants who seceded from pro-slavery denominations and reorganized themselves into independent anti-slavery congregations. He also explores how the network of churches in New York State formed a political wing as the Liberty Party and legitimized the connection between church and state.
