Book excerpt: Desmond Norton's fascinating study of the relationships between landlords and tenants in Ireland during the Great Famine period of the 1840s is principally based on a large uncatalogued archive in private ownership of the Stewart and Kincaid land agents. Much of the information from this unique resource is being published for the first time. Norton challenges existing assumptions about landlord-tenant relations, emigration and land improvement during the famine decade. Messrs Stewart and Kincaid was a firm of land agents based in Dublin, and most of the correspondence was addressed to its office there. The letters in the archive relate mainly to the estates managed by the firm during the 1840s, and give a rounded picture of life in the Irish countryside during the period. They provide evidence of some humane and caring landlords, the activities of middlemen, suffering tenants and emigration in a large number of locations, including Sligo and Roscommon, Clare and Limerick, Kilkenny, Carlow and Westmeath. Many famous families appear such as the Pakenhams and Ponsonbys, well-known historical figures, such as Lord Palmerston, who was foreign secretary and prime minister, as well as being a landlord in Sligo and Dublin. The evidence of the Stewart and Kincaid archives is complemented by research into other family archives and from the author's meetings with descendants of many of the families discussed. "Landlords, Tenants, Famine" is an immensely important contribution to scholarship on the Great Famine and to nineteenth-century Irish economic history.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXI. LAND TENURE: GENERAL CONCLUSIONS. The land question in Ireland presents varying aspects in various parts of the island, on different estates, and on farms of different descriptions. Almost side by side are well and ill-managed estates; great tracts of land liberally and profitably treated, and equally large areas neglected and starved, and which under better treatment might readily produce double their present returns. Irish tenants enjoy more privileges, freedom of action, and security of tenure, than any in Europe; but exceptional cases are met with of tenants ruthlessly rackrented and smarting under grievances which the present laws fail to prevent. Fair profits have been secured from the larger better cultivated farms in most localities, and especially from grazing and dairying. Complaints of distress and difficulty have, however, occurred very generally among small holders on poor, wet, and foul land. In many parts of Ireland few and indifferent roads, and distance from markets, tell seriously upon prices of agricultural produce and reduce rents. Mainly from these causes the value of land differs considerably in the four provinces. Official statistics indicate that the acreable agricultural rent throughout Leinster is 18s. nd., in Ulster 15. 8d., in Munster us. 2d., in Connaught 6s. yd. With TRANSPORT FACILITIES NEEDED. 253 better roads and transit facilities rents in the Southern and Western provinces might more nearly approach those in the east and north. The preceding letters on land tenure and estate management, although describing only scattered properties in Leinster, in Waterford, Cork, and Kerry, throughout Ulster, and in Mayo, afford ample illustration of many phases in the relation of landlord and tenant. They...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of relations between landlords and tenants in Ireland between the great famine and the land war. Based on a remarkably wide range of primary sources, most notably collections of estate papers, it is a comprehensive and wide-ranging analysis, in which W. E. Vaughan explores evictions, rents, tenant right, estate management, agrarian outrages, and tenants' resistance to landlords. Dr Vaughan questions many assumptions about landlord-tenant relations that hitherto have been uncritically accepted. In place of the conventional image of predatory and allpowerful landlords, and oppressed, impoverished tenants, Dr Vaughan presents a scholarly and nuanced picture of complex mutual accommodation, thus revising the traditional view of land relations in nineteenth-century Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part 1 Wilson reconstructs the family circumstances and estate management of two landlords, Stephen Moore, third earl of Mount Cashell, and Major Robert Perceval Maxwell. Each owned several estates in Ireland and the estate known as Amherst Island in Ontario. She examines how the management of these estates changed over time and highlights the differences between management in the north and south of Ireland, particularly in Counties Down, Antrim, and Cork. She looks at the form the landlord-tenant relationship took in the New World to determine whether tenancy arrangements in the New World offered landlords an opportunity to start afresh or, instead, were influenced by the traditions and financial circumstances of their Irish estates. The second part of the study follows more than one hundred tenant families who, between 1820 and 1860, migrated from the Ards Peninsula in County Down to Amherst Island, where they rented land from Mount Cashell and, later, from Maxwell. Wilson reveals what life was like in the United Parish of St Andrews, why families emigrated and rented on Amherst Island, and what it meant socially and economically to be a tenant in the New World, where most farmers were freeholders. Wilson sets her study firmly in the framework of British, Irish, and American writing on land tenure, and in this comparative context opens the discussion of tenancy among Canadians more widely than anyone has done heretofore. She concludes that both landlords and tenants were more successful in the New World. Wealth and land ownership might be slow in materializing, but the opportunity, the choices, and the attainment of security were all greater than they had been in Ireland.
