Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lavishly illustrated with over 150 images - photographs, Victorian prints and specially-drawn plans - this is more than a guide or gazetteer. It is a comprehensive introduction to the rich heritage of Lancashire's country houses, from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries. John Champness provides a lucid account of how and why the layout and decorative details of these houses evolved, how they reflected the attitudes and ambitions of their owners, and how they were built and financed. This book is the product of thirty years' research; it was completed shortly before the author's untimely death. Lancashire's architectural heritage has long been underappreciated - John Champness was one of the foremost experts on the subject. This wonderful book is his legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the remarkable changes made to the built environment in Lancashire’s main textile district – essentially the eastern and central parts of the county – during the Industrial Revolution (c1780-c1850). A case-study approach is taken, with findings from investigations at six different types of site being presented. The sites included are water-powered mill remains in the Cheesden Valley, near Rochdale; Barrow Bridge factory village, near Bolton; the former handloom weavers’ colony at Club Houses, Horwich; Preston’s Winckley Square; Eanam Wharf at Blackburn; and, to the north of Bolton, the road between Bromley Cross and Edgworth. The case studies show how, in rural and urban areas alike, developments in industry, housing and transport greatly extended the built environment and brought striking new features to it. Emphasis is placed on interpreting the physical evidence the sites provide, linking it with that taken from various types of documentary source, especially historical maps. By making comparisons with developments occurring at similar types of site elsewhere in Britain, as well as in Europe and North America, the forms the changes took are explained and their significance assessed. Additionally, insights are provided into the economic and social impact the changes brought, especially on the everyday lives that people led.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Halls in Lancashire and Cheshire: Including Notes on the Ancient Domestic Architecture of the Counties Palatine With Numerous Illustrations As minute architectural descriptions are not easily followed by the general public, and are apt to be found tedious even by professional readers, I have endeavoured so far as possible to Supply their place by accurate drawings. In the illustrations accompanying topographical books it has been too common to take great liberties with facts in order to attain picturesqueness of effect. In the sketches and ground plans contained in the present work the information of the reader has been the object strictly kept in view, and the utmost pains have been taken to ensure absolute accuracy. -in the case of the quadrangular houses bird's-eye views have been given, as no other method of representation would convey any just idea of their size and importance. Owing to pressure of business, I have been obliged to forego the pleasure of making these drawings with my own hand. The illustrations have, therefore, been prepared by others, in part from my own sketches, and in part from carefully measured drawings made specially for this work under my direction. I have to express my thanks to my friends Messrs. W. W. Baldwin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
