Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of two Scottish families were among the free settlers who arrived in Victoria in the 1850s and early 1860s. The seven Langs, descendants of tenant farmers, were born in the Parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire, where graves to their ancestors are found. The three Wilson brothers were descendants of Scottish millers and a Royal Navy Captain. The families were joined together when Margaret Lang, the eldest child of Archibald and Elizabeth Lang, married Andrew Thomson Wilson, son of John Wilson and Jean Thomson in 1849. This book tells the story of the Scottish ancestry of these families and their arrival in Victoria, followed by the generations who dispersed to NSW, Queensland and Western Australia.

The book has many biographies including the Hon. Donald Gunn of Canada, William Gunn of Waranga Park, Sir John Gunn of Tormsdale and the Hon. John Alexander Gunn of New South Wales ('anthrax' Gunn). This book contains much original information showing how Gunns integrated into new lands. This work has taken many years and builds on documents held within the family and much detailed genealogical research. Two versions are available; a paperback black and white version and a deluxe hardback version with some colour photographs. The information and images are the same in both texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever the history of ecological thought has been written the contributions of Australian thinkers have been omitted. Yet Australia as a continent of extreme, rare and complex environments has produced a startling group of ecological pioneers. Across a wide range of human endeavour, Australian thinkers and innovators - whether they have thought of themselves as environmentalists or not - have made some truly original contributions to ecological thought. Ecological Pioneers traces the emergence of ecological understandings in Australia. By constructing a social history with chapters focusing on different fields in the arts, sciences, politics and public life, the authors bring to life the work of significant individuals. Some of the ecological pioneers featured include Joseph Banks, Russell Drysdale, Judith Wright, Myles Dunphy, Philip Crosbie Morrison, Vincent Serventy, Francis Ratcliffe, the Gurindji and Yolngu peoples, Bill Mollison, Jack Mundey, Val Plumwood, Michael Leunig, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persons who have yet to make their acquaintance with the early history of New South Wales will learn with surprise that the colony had been founded for almost a quarter of a century before the Blue Mountain barrier was crossed. For so long a period it was scarcely possible to proceed more than forty miles from Sydney in any direction. Many a despairing look must those early settlers have cast on the frowning ramparts of the range, which, leaving only a narrow margin between itself and the sea, threatened to convert the cradle of the colony into a Procrustes' bed, to which its dimensions would have to conform in the future, as they had done in the past. This sense of confinement was the harder to bear that it was met with in a land of freedom; and many a time did the caged eagle dash itself with fruitless rage against the bars of its prison. A record of the unsuccessful attempts to get beyond the main range would form a heroic chapter of our history, and one, too, of which we might well feel proud, if there is any truth in the saying that in great undertakings it is glorious even to fail. Within four months after the arrival of the "first fleet" our annals present a picture of Governor Phillip and party struggling laboriously westward to the gorges of the mountains.
