Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Private Life of General Lafayette I have been under the necessity of speaking of many individuals who still exist, some of them belonging to, and others unconnected with Lafayette's family. I trust they will pardon me for having introduced their names without previously obtaining their consent; and I am the more inclined to rely upon their indulgence, as I have fortunately had no occasion to present them in any other than a favourable light. It is sober history; yet if the bare facts it tells were set forth without the connecting links, its preface might be made to look like the plot of a dime novel. It is the story of a poor boy who inherited great wealth; who ran away from home to fight for liberty and glory; who became a major-general before he was twenty years old; who knew every nook and corner of the palace at Versailles, yet was the blood brother of American Indians; who tried vainly to save the lives of his king and queen; who was in favor of law, yet remained a rebel to the end of his days; who suffered an unjust imprisonment which has well been called' 'a night five years iong who was twice practically Dictator of France; and who, in his old age, was called upon to make a great decision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of General Lafayette, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Critical Estimate of His Character and Public Acts Original materials for a study of Lafayette's character and public career exist in abundance. The six volumes of correspondence and papers published by his family give a full account of his thoughts, political views, relations with public men and private affairs from his own point of view. Mme. De Lafayette's and Mme. De Lasteyrie's family biographies describe his early life and domestic relations. Besides this published matter, the Historical Societies and private collections in America contain many letters of Lafayette of a private nature which afford much additional information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Act of Incorporation, the by-Laws and a Brief History of the Brooklyn Institute, 1888 In the Summer of 1823 several gentlemen, among whom was Augustus Graham, met at Stevenson's Tavern for the purpose of establishing for the appren tices of Brooklyn a Free Library. They adopted a constitution and issued to the citizens of Brooklyn a circular, in which they solicited donations of books and money with which to effect their purpose. On November 2oth, 1824, they were incorporated by the Legislature of the State under the name of The Brook lyn Apprentices Library Association, and on July 4th, 1825, the corner-stone of the first building owned by the Association was laid by General Lafayette, at the junction of Henry and Cranberry streets. The first lecture delivered in the completed structure was by Professor Dana. As early as 1835 the Association had outgrown its original quarters, and the property being sold to the city the Institution was removed to its present site on Washington street, then the centre of the wealth and culture of our young city. Book excerpt: A pioneering, dazzling satire about a biracial black girl from Philadelphia searching for her Jewish father in New York City Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb. Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.
