This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour's Wrongs and Labour's Remedy, or the Age of Might and the Age of Right Whenever any crisis in the affairs of men is about to take place, there is ever to be found a number of people ready to preach up things as they are. These champions fight stoutly and cunningly against the innovation of existing institutions and modes of acting; and they endeavour to reason the sensible and alarm the timid into remaining quiet, and enduring meekly whatever evils they may be afflicted with. Belonging to one class, and having in view a common object, these alarmists attempt to convince the people that everything is almost as well as it can be - that few evils are endured by them which are not necessary consequences of existence-that their governmental burthens may be alleviated by gradual and imperceptible reforms that the present gradations of society, which cause so much discontentment among the poor and the Oppressed, have always existed, and therefore ever must exist-and that any attempts of the productive classes to better themselves by interfering with this natural arrangement of society, will be attended with the most disastrous results to themselves. Book Synopsis The People's Science by : Noel W. Thompson
Download or read book The People's Science written by Noel W. Thompson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work details the emergence, in the post-Napoleonic War period, of a growing popular interest in the critical potentialities of political economy. It considers why this occurred and discusses how the conceptual and analytical tools of political economy were utilised to formulate a critique of early industrial capitalism. The book examines the theories of labour exploitation and capitalist crisis which represented the essence of that critique both as they were elaborated by early-nineteenth-century British anti-capitalist and socialist writers and as they were popularised by writers in the working-class press of the period 1816-34. The book argues that by 1834 in consequence of the efforts of writers such as Hodgskin, Thompson, Gray, Owen and their popularisers the foundations of a distinctively anti-capitalist and socialist political economy had been established and widely disseminated. But these foundations were theoretically flawed. They were flawed by an overconcentration on the sphere of exchange which derived from a particular conception of the determination of exchange value under capitalism; an overconcentration which led on to the suggestion of remedies for the problem of working-class poverty and distress which were necessarily doomed to failure.

Download or read book Chartist Revolution written by Rob Sewell and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartism was the first time ever that British workers fixed their eyes on the seizure of political power: in 1839, 1842 and again in 1848. In this struggle, they conducted a class war that at different times involved general strikes, battles with the state, mass demonstrations and even armed insurrection. They forged weapons, illegally drilled their forces, and armed themselves in preparation for seizing the reins of government. Such were the early revolutionary traditions of the British working class, deliberately buried beneath a mountain of falsehoods and distortions. This book sees Chartism as an essential part of our history from which we must draw the key lessons for today.
