Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour market flexibility is one of the most closely debated public policy issues in India. This book provides a theoretical framework to understand the subject, and empirically examines to what extent India’s ‘jobless growth’ may be attributed to labour laws. There is a pervasive view that the country’s low manufacturing base and inability to generate jobs is primarily due to rigid labour laws. Therefore, job creation is sought to be boosted by reforming labour laws. However, the book argues that if labour laws are made flexible, then there are adverse consequences for workers: dismantled job security weakens workers’ bargaining power, incapacitates trade union movement, skews class distribution of output, dilutes workers’ rights, and renders them vulnerable. The book: identifies and critically examines the theory underlying the labour market flexibility (LMF) argument employs innovative empirical methods to test the LMF argument offers an overview of the organised labour market in India comprehensively discusses the proposed/instituted labour law reforms in the country contextualises the LMF argument in a macroeconomic setting discusses the political economy of labour law reforms in India. This book will interest scholars and researchers in economics, development studies, and public policy as well as economists, policymakers, and teachers of human resource management.

On this front, however, the Indian experience has remained seriously inadequate. During the first four decades after Independence, India’s achievements with respect to the problems of poverty, unemployment and occupational structural transformation were modest at best. Since the early 1990s, during the era of neo-liberal reforms, while economic growth has remained upbeat, the wellbeing of the masses has shown even greater stress. An indispensable entry point to the subject of labour in India, this Short Introduction locates the debate within the trajectory of economic development since India’s independence.

Book excerpt: Labour policy of the Government of India derives its philosophy from the Directive Principles of State Policy as enshrined in the Constitution of India. Various legislations have been enacted to promote employment and general welfare of labour. As in other developing countries, unemployment is a serious problem of the Indian economy. The poverty of the masses in India is closely related to the problem of unemployment. Unemployment is a multi-dimensional phenomenon in India. It is not restricted to one sector or group of population. Instead, it is a widespread disease touching almost every segment of the society. Policies of economic liberalisation have drastically altered the relationship between the state, labour and business. This book covers all these aspects of labour policy in the context of ongoing economic reforms in India.

Deshpande, provides rich and comprehensive insights into the contemporary labor law reform debates. Perhaps for the first time, it contains articles primarily from stakeholders in the industrial relations system, namely representatives of trade unions and employers, business consultants, and retired government officials, in addition to a few academics. These contributors bring diverse perspectives from their long-standing field experience, providing insight on the proposed reforms. More than a simple academic read, this volume fills a critical void in the literature on the ongoing debate about labor and governance reforms in India and their impact on both the ease of doing business and workers' rights.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the current conditions of work in the Indian factory sector, and provides a critical analysis of the wage, profit and productivity behaviour in India’s organised manufacturing sector over the last two decades. Examining the specificities of the conditions of industrial workers, it addresses three major questions:/-//-/- What has happened to the relative shares of profits and wages;/-/- How do we explain the levels and changes and;/-/- Are better labour standards antithetical to the project of industrial restructuring?/-//-/The author also examines the problem of industrial restructuring in India within the broader context of power and inequality in the workplace. He argues that even though the existing laws mandate decent labour conditions, India has been unable to implement them because of the minimalist position taken by successive governments./-//-/Providing new and fascinating insights into industrial growth, labour standards and development in the framework of globalisation, this book will interest students and scholars of economics, economic history, political science and sociology, as well as students of management and labour relations.
