Asia’s trade and cultural contact with the Gulf date back to ancient historical times. Since the 1970s, the economic rise of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries owing to the discovery of oil has inspired a huge influx of migrant workers from Asia. At present, out of roughly 15 million expatriates in the Gulf region, Asians constitute around 12 million (80 percent). The chapters in this book look at migration from countries like India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and Philippines to the different GCC countries. Book excerpt: This study explores the short term migration of Bangladeshi women to Malaysia to work in labour intensive, export oriented factories, and considers the consequences of their decision to migrate. While international migration is a much discussed issue, so far little attention has been given to the vast flow of South-to-South migration, which is particularly large in Asia. The labour migration flows within this region are typified by their highly regulated nature, temporary character and by the predominance of females undertaking migration. So far, most academic attention has focused on permanent or settlement migration. This study aims to fill a gap in our understanding of migration theory by focusing on temporary migration processes. The study examines the reasons Bangladeshi women gave for migrating and how their experience impacted their lives during their migration and after their return. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating gender in migration theory and integrating it into analyses. While in most cases their migration was socio-culturally contested, the women say they migrated in an effort to improve their socio-economic standing. This proved in general to be more difficult than anticipated; wages were not paid according to contract or labour law, and male peers often opposed their efforts. The complex nature of these women's position and situation preclude unequivocal conclusions as to the possible benefits or losses resulting from migration. But by revealing the experiences of individual women, this study helps to clarify some of the ambiguities of the individual migrants complex reality. The analysis of their experiences exposes important gender dynamics.

Book excerpt: At present, our knowledge of the current state of solidarity between parents and their adult children in Europe is limited. Insight into contemporary intergenerational solidarity is not only important for the well-being of individuals but is also of great interest to policy makers. Patterns of intergenerational solidarity are not only affected by social policies and services but also reveal a number of important social policy issues and dilemmas. Will encouraging labour force participation among women and older workers mean they have less time to care for their dependents? Should formal care services be further expanded to relieve the burden faced by family members with the risk that they start to replace informal care? This report aims to contribute to this insight by providing a more differentiated picture of the strength, nature and direction of solidarity between parents and their adult children, its variation among European countries and its determinants. Our findings indicate that parent-child ties are quite strong. The majority of Europeans aged 50 and over live in close proximity and are in frequent contact with at least one of the children. Moreover, strong family care obligations still exist and a substantial amount of support is being exchanged between parents and their non-co resident children. Interesting differences, however, emerge between individuals and countries. While fathers are more inclined to assist their children financially, mothers have more frequent contact and exchange more help in kind with their children. Being religious and having a large family have a positive impact on several dimensions of intergenerational solidarity. Parental divorce and a better socioeconomic position of parents and children, on the other hand, lead to a weakening of parent-child ties in many respects. Contrary to common belief, employed children show solidarity with their parents as much as those without a paid job. Differences in the nature of intergenerational solidarity between the European countries tend to follow the general division into an individualistic north and a familistic south.
