Book Synopsis Labor's Millennium by : Brett H. Smith
Download or read book Labor's Millennium written by Brett H. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians have traditionally interpreted the American land-grant higher-education movement as the result of political and economic forces. Little attention has been given, however, to any explicit or implicit theological motivations for the movement. This book tells the story of how the Christian belief of many founders of the University of Illinois motivated their educational theory and practice. Constructing a social gospel of labor's millennium (their shorthand for God's kingdom being enhanced through agricultural and mechanical education), they initially proposed that the university would impart a millenarian blessing for the larger society by providing abundant food, economic prosperity, vocational dignity, and a charitable spirit of sacred unity and public service. Rich in primary-source research, Smith's account builds a compelling case for at least one such institution's adaptation of an inherited evangelical educational tradition, transitioning into a new era of higher learning that has left its mark on university life today.

Download or read book The Brave New World of European Labor written by Andrew Martin and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a common framework developed by a collaborative Harvard University and Brandeis University affiliated research team, this volume surveys and analyzes the strategic responses of national unions in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain to the last two decades of economic change. Also evaluated is the response of Sweden, long seen as the most successful variation of the European model, as well as EU level transnational unionism. The volume concludes with a reflection on new union positions and their implications, particularly on the question of what will happen to the "European model of society" as a consequence. Book Synopsis Love in the New Millennium by : Can Xue
Download or read book Love in the New Millennium written by Can Xue and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most ambitious work of fiction by a writer widely considered the most important novelist working in China today In this darkly comic novel, a group of women inhabits a world of constant surveillance, where informants lurk in the flowerbeds and false reports fly. Conspiracies abound in a community that normalizes paranoia and suspicion. Some try to flee—whether to a mysterious gambling bordello or to ancestral homes that can only be reached underground through muddy caves, sewers, and tunnels. Others seek out the refuge of Nest County, where traditional Chinese herbal medicines can reshape or psychologically transport the self. Each life is circumscribed by buried secrets and transcendent delusions. Can Xue's masterful love stories for the new millennium trace love's many guises—satirical, tragic, transient, lasting, nebulous, and fulfilling—against a kaleidoscopic backdrop drawn from East and West of commerce and industry, fraud and exploitation, sex and romance.

Book Synopsis International Migration in the New Millennium by : Danièle Joly
Download or read book International Migration in the New Millennium written by Danièle Joly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration is an issue of enduring interest and debate, as strong as ever in the 21st century. This in-depth, global examination proposes a balance sheet of international migration and highlights its consequences regarding migrant populations at the turn of the century. It draws together theoretical studies supported by empirical examples, and derives from quantitative as well as qualitative research. Assessing the major existing models within the theory of international migration, the contributors continue to examine a variety of key themes, including: increased flows of female migration; the meaning and relationship between identity, ethnicity and diaspora; return migration and the complex problem of reintegration. The volume also establishes a typology of refugees and examines the different domains of ethnicity and racism. A valuable volume for all those interested in migration, population settlement and transnational communities, it addresses all the major issues of international migration in the new millennium.
