Book excerpt: Irradiated Zircaloy cladding specimens, which had experienced fluences from 0.1 to 6 x 1021 n/cm2 (E>0.1 MeV), were gas-pressure tested in an iodine environment to investigate their stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility. The test temperatures and hoop stresses ranged from 320 to 360°C and 150 to 500 MPa, respectively. The results indicate that irradiation, in general, increases the susceptibility of Zircaloy to iodine SCC. For specimens that experienced fluences>2 x 1021 n/cm2 (E>0.1 MeV), the 24-h failure stress was 177+-18 MPa, regardless of the preirradiation metallurgical condition. An analytical model for iodine SCC has been developed which agrees reasonably well with the test results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of internal gas pressurization tests, primarily at 320°C, on cladding tubes from two suppliers, Supplier A and Supplier B, are presented. The two lots show a substantial difference in iodine SCC susceptibility so a test matrix is used to resolve the relative contributions of surface condition, residual stress, and texture. Additional tests with constant deflection split-ring specimens and with unstressed cladding segments are used to understand crack initiation and the early crack growth stages of SCC. The difference in SCC susceptibility is due to crystallographic texture. Other variables such as surface finish, stress relief temperature, and residual stress have little or no effect. Mechanical properties, crack initiation, and crack propagation all depend on texture. Both initiation and propagation features are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. A mechanism for crack initiation consistent with most observations in this study and with the work of other investigators is proposed. At 320°C, lifetime is crack initiation limited while several tests at 390°C indicate that lifetime is less initiation limited at higher temperature. 31 figures, 9 tables.

Book excerpt: A crack-growth model of stress corrosion cracking has been successfully applied to predict times-to-failure of zircaloy specimens exposed to iodine vapor. Data for two types of tests were analyzed using the model. The first was a variable loading experiment in which failure occurred after the specimen had been subjected to two distinct stresses in succession. The second was a series of tests in which surface roughness, and probably residual stress as well, was reduced by chemical polishing of the specimens. The success of the crack growth model in dealing with these situations suggests that crack propagation rather than crack initiation is the rate-controlling step in iodine stress corrosion cracking of zircaloy. Furthermore, the metal in the vicinity of the growing crack is apparently so embrittled by iodine that a model originally intended for ceramics applies.

Book excerpt: The effects of iodine stress corrosion cracking (iscc) on the rupture behaviour of candu fuel sheathings at temperatures of 700 degrees c and 800 degrees c in isothermal hold tests were investigated under inert gas conditions. the sheaths were tested in the as-received condition with no braze zones or appendages . a test apparatus and specimen design were developed to provide an environment suitable for iscc during high temperature transient conditions. the burst tests showed that the deformation behaviour of the zircaloy tubes was not influenced by the presence of iodine at 800 degrees c at hoop stresses between 15 mpa-35 mpa, when subjected to temperature ramps of approximately 30 degrees c/s. iscc were observed at 700 degrees c at hoop stresses of 40-60-mpa. a three-fold reduction in sheath strain was observed in specimens which failed by iscc when compared with reference specimens containing no iodine. no significant difference in time-to-failure was observed between the reference specimens and the iodine specimens at both temperatures.

Book excerpt: To investigate iodine stress corrosion cracking on the behavior of Zircaloy tubing, a standard test procedure with internally pressurized creep specimens (I-SCC standard test) and a split-ring test (I-SCC laboratory test) were developed. The threshold value for brittle cracking in iodine is 10-6 g iodine per square centimetre. The uniform elongation shows a clear minimum in its dependence on strain rate. Basal pole orientations in the range of ±50 to ±70 deg relative to the radial direction are the most I-SCC sensitive textures. The I-SCC process occurs in several stages; incubation, crack nucleation, and propagation. A thermodynamic evaluation indicates that I-SCC only occurs when zirconium iodides condense on the Zircaloy surface. Results show that comparisons of the I-SCC susceptibility of tubing manufactured in different manners should be made at the same point on the strain rate versus uniform elongation curves; for example, at the strain rate with the minimum of uniform elongation.

Book excerpt: Many Zircaloy cladding failures and the results of out-of-pile iodine stress corrosion tests are so similar as to suggest that fission of uranium produces enough iodine to attack the cladding locally. This paper presents a study of the effects of iodine on the fracture of Zircaloy-2 sheet being stressed very locally. Discs produced from Zircaloy-2 sheet were bent biaxially by pressing an indentor into the center of the disc. The force necessary to penetrate the discs decreased when either the initial amount of iodine or the temperature was increased, for cold-worked as well as recrystallized Zircaloy-2. Uniaxial short-time creep tests and tests with stressed slotted rings, both performed in environments containing iodine, did not result in stress corrosion cracking.
