Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Inorganic Chemistry The experiments to illustrate the properties of metals and their compounds are followed by an outline Of a general method for testing a Simple salt for the metal and acid radical present. The short time available in the first year for qualita tive analysis makes it impossible for the student to master the methods used in the separation of the metallic element's. He can, however, by the Simple procedure outlined learn to identify pure salts. The method described has been found to be an excellent introduction to qualitative analysis. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback! Renew your inorganic chemistry lab course! This book offers detailed descriptions of more than 60 experiments ranging from undergraduate to graduate level, covering organometallic, main group, solid state and coordination chemistry. Almost all reaction types, laboratory techniques and classes of compounds which constitute current curricula are exemplarily represented. Experiments have been contributed from university teachers all over Europe. Each experiment has been thoroughly tested. Special safety instructions are always provided, highly hazardous substances have been substituted by less harmful ones wherever possible. Products are characterized by modern spectroscopic techniques. Also included are excercises, questions and hints to further reading. The experiments illustrate modern research directions: many compounds have only very recently been described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination chemistry is the study of compounds formed between metal ions and other neutral or negatively charged molecules. This book offers a series of investigative inorganic laboratories approached through systematic coordination chemistry. It not only highlights the key fundamental components of the coordination chemistry field, it also exemplifies the historical development of concepts in the field. In order to graduate as a chemistry major that fills the requirements of the American Chemical Society, a student needs to take a laboratory course in inorganic chemistry. Most professors who teach and inorganic chemistry laboratory prefer to emphasize coordination chemistry rather than attempting to cover all aspects of inorganic chemistry; because it keeps the students focused on a cohesive part of inorganic chemistry, which has applications in medicine, the environment, molecular biology, organic synthesis, and inorganic materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In revising the text opportunity has been taken to introduce SI units throughout. An Appendix has been included which contains tables of SI units and a table of conversion factors for use when consulting data in non-SI units. Chapter 19 now includes experiments demon strating the use of ion-exchange and solid-liquid chromatography_ Exercises involving colorimetry have been included in Chapter 17. These techniques are introduced as part of a complementary exercise where their relevance is seen as part of a complete piece of work. Minor improvements have been made to some of the experimental procedures and we are grateful to those who have made helpful suggestions in this respect. G. PASS H. SUTCLIFFE iii Preface to the First Edition The student of inorganic chemistry is fortunate in having a wide choice of textbooks covering the descriptive and theoretical aspects of the sUbject. There is no comparable choice of textbooks covering practical inorganic chemistry. Moreover, there is a tendency for many students to draw an unfortunate distinction between chemistry taught in the lecture room, and laboratory work. Consideration of these points prompted the preparation of this book, in which we have attempted to emphasize the relationship between theory and practice.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Experimental Chemistry (With Descriptive Notes) For Students of General Inorganic Chemistry While no particular claim to originality is made for this text-book, as many of the experiments have been described previously, yet the writer believes that the book will be found to be something more than a mere compilation. It grew originally out of a personal demand for a textbook which would embody: (a) a clear, accurate and comprehensive presentation of the fundamentals of the science; (b) specific directions for laboratory work, coupled with such questions as lead the student to observe, compare and generalize, and would therefore provide a method for the scientific development of the principles under discussion; (c) a sufficient amount of discussion and application of the principles involved in the experiments to foster the interest and to direct the observations that energy may not be spent indiscriminately, and (d) those physico-chemical generalizations which are essential to the explanation of much of the phenomena of inorganic chemistry. This book represents an endeavor to meet these requirements. It is not intended that it shall take the place of a large descriptive work or the instruction of the teacher; on the contrary, it is designed to provide, primarily, an experimental course in general chemistry, and by the use of "descriptive notes" and questions vitally relate it to the lecture-room work. It is scarcely necessary to emphazise the importance of laboratory work as being essential to a thorough comprehension of the subject; but this same work has a very doubtful value unless it is carefully directed and correlated with the lecture and text-book. It must not be merely a mechanical part of the course. The student must see that his laboratory work is but a means to an end - that lectures and experiments are mutually helpful. Very frequently the laboratory work is taught too much apart from the course. Beginners often complain, and more frequently conduct their work as if no relation existed between lectures and laboratory work. It is contended, therefore, that the laboratory manual should provide something to make obvious this relationship and to assist in the fusion of the two.
