To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the appa ratus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materi ally aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. While the water in the beaker is being heated, weigh the convex cover to the nearest milligram, first having scrupulously cleaned and dried it. Measure into the graduated flask 100 c.c. Of the water to be examined or such a volume as will leave not less than 10 milligrams of solid residue on evaporation. Place the weighed convex cover on top of the beaker containing the boiling water and carefully add a portion of the measured volume of water. As it evaporates, add more and more, until the whole has been evaporated. Continue the evaporation until the residue on the cover appears perfectly dry. Cool in a desiccator and weigh with the same precision as before. Calculation OF result. - Express the result as parts per million and as grains per U. S. Gallon. Consult works in the library or other sources to secure similar data on other waters and arrange them in the form of a table. Laboratory manuals and the like generally contain little more than mere descriptions of technical methods of analysis, and explanations of the underlying chemical principles or of their applications are seldom attempted. It is evident that such books can be of very little help to students. The mechanism of the reactions involved in analytical methods is by no means so clear that explanation is unnecessary, since a student usually begins technical analysis at a comparatively early stage in his course. Neither can it be assumed that the student has sufficient knowledge of the practical side of the subject to enable him to grasp the full significance of the analysis in which he is engaged. Only when the analyst understands what part the raw material under examination is destined to play in subsequent industrial operations, how a manufactured product has reached its final condition and for what purpose it is to be used, is he in a position to appreciate the importance of the various determinations, or the consequences that might ensue from a faulty analysis. The author, as lecturer in the Darmstadt Technical School, knows from his long experience that it is just the emphasis laid upon the technical application of an analysis which deepens the student's knowledge and understanding of chemical processes. Interest is stimulated in the analysis itself, which is thus saved from being regarded merely as an unnecessary extension of ordinary quantitative analysis.
