In Lorca's Experimental Theater: Breaking the Guardrails of Convention, Andrew A. Anderson focuses on four of Lorca's most challenging plays-Amor de don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín, El público, Así que pasen cinco años, and El sueño de la vida (previously known as Comedia sin título)-and on the surrounding context in which they came to be written and in only one case performed during his lifetime. While none of Lorca's plays can be considered conventional, according to Anderson, some of them are nevertheless more approachable than others. The four considered here are the works that challenge theatrical conventions most forcefully, both thematically and technically. The introduction offers a brief overview of Lorca's entire dramatic output and the place within it of his four most experimental plays. The first chapter, "Staging the Unstageable," gives details concerning the chronology of the plays' composition, what Lorca had to say about them in newspaper interviews, and, most importantly, his numerous attempts to get what he called his "unperformable plays" actually performed. After a chapter on the pervasive role of undecidability in Amor de don Perlimplín, two further contextual chapters cover what Anderson considers the most significant factors that encouraged Lorca to continue experimenting in his dramatical works, namely his exposure to theater in New York over 1929-1930 and his increasing familiarity with expressionist drama that he both read and heard about from other theater professionals. Despite the fact that Darwinian theory was perhaps the big idea of the nineteenth century, most critics in the past have assumed that Benito Pérez Galdós would have remained unaffected by this scientific and philosophical revolution. This work contends otherwise, charting the influence of evolutionary theories on Galdós throughout his literary career. From his adaptation of the early nineteenth-century costumbristas' depiction of social species into a more sophisticated portrayal of Madrid society to his treatment of shifting social forces at a time of major socio-economic change, Galdós's outlook is shown to be deeply enmeshed in the Darwinian debate. Attention is paid not only to the hypotheses of Darwin himself, but also for instance to Ernst Haeckel's evolutionary thought, to Herbert Spencer's social Darwinism, and to the radical histology of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Galdós and Darwin discusses how Spain's greatest novelist since Cervantes imaginatively reworked these epoch-making theories and investigates the impact of science on culture as the Spanish nation approached the twentieth century. This work on the Catalan devising collective Els Joglars and the Madrid producing venue Teatro de la Abad a seeks to redress the balance with a close analysis of methodologies employed in rehearsal. In effect, both companies have created distinctive rehearsal processes by applying ideas and techniques from a wider European context to a Spanish theatre scene which had been seen to follow rather than develop trends and techniques visible in theatre across France, Italy and Germany. Critically, their hybrid rehearsal processes generate heightened theatrical results for the audience. Thus the book shifts the focus of academic study away from product and towards process, demonstrating how an understanding of process assists in the reading of the theatrical product. Simon David Breden obtained a PhD in Drama & Hispanic Studies from Queen Mary, University of London. He has worked as a professional director and expert in Spanish theatre in London and Madrid.
