Book excerpt: The characterization at the molecular scale of structural disorder is a crucial issue for modern chemistry. To that end, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) plays a crucial role for characterizing disordered solids, which are barely accessible through diffusion or diffraction methods. Through the improvement and the development of new multidimensional techniques, we have shown that correlations of isotropic interactions such as chemical shifts and scalar couplings between neighboring nuclei can be used to get deep insights into the origin and nature of the structural disorder. Our approach combines state-of-the-art high resolution NMR and calculations of NMR parameters at the functional density level of theory. Applications of the our methods to biopolymers, locally-ordered layered silicates, and to slightly disordered crystalline species have provided new insights into these systems, and opened new fields for the fine characterization of structural disorder at the molecular scale.

Book excerpt: Apres un rappel des methodes existantes de rmn haute-resolution sur les noyaux quadrupolaires, nous presentons une etude de la manipulation des coherences multiquanta par des impulsions de champ radiofrequence. Les resultats obtenus sont ensuite appliques a la recherche des conditions optimales pour la realisation des nouvelles experiences de correlation multiquanta en rotation a l'angle magique (ou mqmas). Nous rappelons les principes de cette methode, des sequences et du traitement du signal utilises pour l'obtention des spectres. Un ensemble d'exemples d'application (sur les hydrates alumineux et ciments) permettent de montrer les progres majeurs apportes par cette nouvelle technique. Nous presentons ensuite le formalisme que nous avons developpe pour l'etude theorique et numerique du comportement d'un spin soumis a une interaction quadripolaire en presence d'un champ radiofrequence et dans un echantillon en rotation. Il est applique a l'etude des phenomenes de transfert de coherence adiabatique induit par la rotation de l'echantillon. Nous proposons ensuite une extension pour decrire quantitativement tous les aspects de la spectroscopie mqmas. Les resultats experimentaux permettent de valider notre approche. Une etude preliminaire de l'application de la spectroscopie mqmas et des simulations pour l'analyse structurale de materiaux amorphes est presentee. La troisieme et derniere partie presente la theorie et les resultats obtenus sur l'etude de l'ordre dipolaire en rotation a l'angle magique. Deux modeles distincts sont proposes selon le regime d'evolution du systeme : vitesse de rotation lente et regime adiabatique, vitesse de rotation rapide.
