Book Synopsis Doing Ethics in a Pluralistic World by : Phyllis D. Airhart
Download or read book Doing Ethics in a Pluralistic World written by Phyllis D. Airhart and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Ethics in a Pluralistic World is an apt title for this collection of essays in honour of Roger C. Hutchinson who, over many decades, has encouraged and participated in shaping a Canadian contextual social ethics. His abiding interest in social ethics and in religious engagement with public issues is reflected in his life’s work — seeking the consensus and self-knowledge required to achieve cooperation in the search for a just, participatory, and sustainable society. One of Roger Hutchinson’s many notable accomplishments is his development of a method of dialogue for ethical clarification in situations of diversity. Some of the essays collected here apply this method to specific issues, while others discuss how religious persons and organizations can and do co-operate in a pluralistic world to achieve social and ecological well-being. All essays are of keen interest to those concerned with the role and function of ethics at the matrix of religious conviction and social transformation. For nearly three decades Roger Hutchinson has been based at Victoria University in Toronto, first in religious studies, then at Emmanuel College, where he completed his teaching career as professor of church and society while serving as principal from 1996 to 2001.
Book Synopsis The Dawn of Canada's Century by : Gordon Darroch
Download or read book The Dawn of Canada's Century written by Gordon Darroch and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Wilfrid Laurier famously claimed that the twentieth century would be Canada's century and, indeed, its opening decade witnessed remarkable territorial, demographic, and social transformations. Yet the lives of those who lived and laboured to fashion these changes remain largely hidden from historical view. The Dawn of Canada's Century presents close and systematic interpretations of everyday lives based on the first national sample of the 1911 census. Written by many of Canada's leading historical researchers, The Dawn of Canada's Century demonstrates the wide-ranging and revealing social histories made possible by the new Canadian Century Research Infrastructure, an innovative database of national samples of decennial census microdata, from 1911 through 1951. This revealing collection sheds new light on topics including identity and language, the socio-demography of aboriginal populations, national labour market dynamics, earnings distributions, social mobility, gender and immigration experiences, and the technologies of census taking. Situating early twentieth-century Canada within international historical population studies, these essays provide new ways to understand individuals' lives and connect them to larger structural changes. Book Synopsis La Nouvelle Question sociale. Repenser l'Etat-providence by : Pierre Rosanvallon
Download or read book La Nouvelle Question sociale. Repenser l'Etat-providence written by Pierre Rosanvallon and published by Média Diffusion. This book was released on 2015-05-28T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Truth and Relevance by : Gregory Baum
Download or read book Truth and Relevance written by Gregory Baum and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Quiet Revolution, the Catholic church lost its stronghold in Quebec. Despite this decline, or perhaps because of it, contemporary Catholic thought in Quebec exhibits a bold creativity. In Truth and Relevance, Gregory Baum introduces, contextualizes, and interprets Catholic theological writing in Quebec since the 1960s, and presents this body of work for an anglophone readership. Baum shows how Catholic theologians, inspired by the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), uncovered the social meaning in the Christian message, allowing them to address many problems and concerns of contemporary society. With reliance on the Gospel, they supported Quebec's new self-understanding, embraced its nationalism under certain conditions, fostered social solidarity, criticized the unregulated market system, demanded gender equality, and called for respect of new religious and cultural pluralism. Leaving behind the Catholicism of Quebec's past, these theologians embraced the humanistic values of modern society, recognizing their affinity with the Gospel, while at the same time revealing the destructive potential of modernity, its individualism, utilitarianism, relativism, and its link to empire and capitalism. Weaving together theological and sociological reflections, Truth and Relevance is a fascinating account of modernity, secularism, and the evolution of the Catholic church in Quebec.

Book Synopsis Églises et santé dans le Tiers Monde. Hier et aujourd'hui by : Jean Pirotte
Download or read book Églises et santé dans le Tiers Monde. Hier et aujourd'hui written by Jean Pirotte and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen papers presented here examine three centuries of close, if sometimes ambiguous, links between Christian mission and medicine. The authors, who include theologians, historians, sociologists, physicians and representatives of major international health-care organisations, address themselves to such questions as: How is one to assess the results of past missionary health-care effort? How are modern-day Christian organisations to cope with the burden of institutions set up in the past? What links should the Churches maintain with official medical organisations? What position should the Churches take on the 'faith v. healing' debate begun by certain religious groups? And how is one to lay the groundwork of a theology of health and healing? The complexity of the issues outlined here can - alas - provide no easy answers.

Book Synopsis Reflections on Pope Francis's Encyclical, Laudato si' by : John Arthur Orr
Download or read book Reflections on Pope Francis's Encyclical, Laudato si' written by John Arthur Orr and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a collection of essays by emerging and well-established Catholic scholars on Laudato si’, Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment. All contributors are connected with the Maryvale Institute in Birmingham, the only Vatican approved Higher Institute of Religious Sciences in the English-speaking world. When it appeared, Laudato si’ was widely welcomed by many, and strongly criticised by others. All agreed that the encyclical was an important voice in the environmental debate. As this book suggests, however, Laudato si’ is more than an encyclical on the environment: it is a thorough examination of the human condition in the early twenty-first century. Essays in this volume focus on the philosophical, textual, ecological, anthropological and theological aspects of Laudato si’, place it in a specific history of ideas, and contemplate its meaning for the modern world. Laudato si’ has been widely discussed in religious and secular circles alike, and this book will enhance the understanding of the text for both.

Book Synopsis Human Dignity and the Common Good by : Richard Rousseau
Download or read book Human Dignity and the Common Good written by Richard Rousseau and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consisting of the full text of eight papal social encyclicals dating back to 1891 and the papacy of Leo XIII, and one important papal radio address on Christian social ethics, this reference work also introduces, outlines, and summarizes the texts in a clear, understandable language. Each encyclical was intended to be a commentary on and modernization of Leo XIII's masterly and foundational encyclical Rerum Novarum, and Rousseau brings them together using their standard paragraph numbering system for easy reference. This valuable reference represents a unique thematic approach to these important religious and social documents. Readers will better understand the social, economic, political and thoroughly Christian ideas of Popes throughout the 20th century with the outline and summary interpretation of each text.
