Sin embargo, los roles y las relaciones de género son componentes importantes de nuevos problemas clave relacionados con los bosques, como son el cambio climático y los riesgos y oportunidades diferenciados que enfrentan las mujeres y los hombres en distintos contextos. Este documento revisa la literatura reciente (en inglés, español y portugués) que aborda el género y los bosques en la Amazonía, centrándose en: los derechos de propiedad en los territorios y comunidades amazónicos; las diversas y cambiantes relaciones de género; los programas de manejo forestal; y la participación de las mujeres en movimientos y organizaciones sociales. La revisión halló importantes barreras históricas, socioculturales y materiales para la equidad de género y para la participación plena de las mujeres en la gestión sostenible de los bosques amazónicos, y una relativa falta de enfoque de género en los programas de manejo forestal, a pesar de algunos ejemplos promisorios. El hallazgo más importante fue que, en las últimas dos décadas, las mujeres de diferentes grupos sociales amazónicos se han vuelto cada vez más organizadas, lo que ha traído como resultado una mejora de sus derechos, de sus niveles de participación y de su empoderamiento. Se requiere más investigación para entender la variabilidad de las relaciones de género y los derechos en diversos contextos amazónicos, y cómo estos están cambiando. También se requiere investigación para entender y apoyar los esfuerzos por mejorar la equidad de género en los derechos sobre los recursos y los ingresos, y la participación en decisiones clave de la comunidad y la sociedad sobre el futuro de los bosques y pueblos de la Amazonía.
