Download or read book Teodoro González de León : complete work written by Miquel Adrià and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Mexican architecture in the second half of the twentieth century cannot be told without the work of Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon. His banks, civic buildings, museums and office complexes have contributed to defining the urban texture of a large part of Mexico: the product of a conception of monumentality in which modernity and timelessness seem to coexist. Architect, urbanist, painter and sculptor, Gozalez de Leon is also a tireless promoter of architecture understood as a cultural phenomenon. The publication of the complete works of Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon makes it possible to take in a single glance more than fifty years of militant commitment to the discipline. Some of the architect's occasional writings have been inserted into the book, like his own urban icons throughout the city, to illustrate the constant dialectic between work and reflection. The conceptual and constructive rigor of Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon has made possible a forceful and original body of work, monumental, unique, at once Mexican and universal. His works are conceived as assemblages, possessing a singular logic and reality: each one is a paragraph, a chapter in a story, in a method that describes how to make and to understand architecture.
Book Synopsis The Grid and the Park by : Adrián Gorelik
Download or read book The Grid and the Park written by Adrián Gorelik and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in Spanish in 1998, The Grid and the Park not only revitalized studies on the history of Buenos Aires, but also laid the foundation for a specific type of cultural work on the city -an urban perspective for cultural history, as its author would describe it- that has had a sustained impact in Latin America. Public space, embodied in the grid of city blocks and the park system, here appears as a particularly productive category because it encompasses dimensions of the material city, politics, and culture, which are usually studied separately. From Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's figurations of Palermo Park in the mid-nineteenth century to Jorge Luis Borges's discovery of the suburb in the 1920s; from the modernization of the traditional center carried out by Mayor Torcuato de Alvear in the 1880s to the questioning of that centrality by the emergence of the suburban barrio, the book weaves the changing ideas on public space with urban culture to produce a new history of the metropolitan expansion of Buenos Aires, one of the most extensive and dynamic urban centers of the early twentieth century.

Book excerpt: MAD works in forward-looking environments developing futuristic architecture based on a contemporary interpretation of the eastern spirit of nature. All of MAD's projects - from residential complexes or offices to cultural centres - desire to protect a sense of community and orientation toward nature, offering people the freedom to develop their own experience. Founded in 2004 by Ma Yansong, the office first earned worldwide attention in 2006 by winning an international competition to design a residential tower near Toronto, expected to be completed in the summer of 2012. MAD has been commissioned by clients of all backgrounds, leading to an intriguing combination of diverse project designs. MAD's ongoing projects include two major cultural projects in Harbin: the China Wood Sculpture Museum and Harbin Culture Island, an opera house and cultural center that will retain the original wetlands as an urban park between the old and new city. MAD is led by Ma Yansong, Dang Qun and Yosuke Hayano. They have been awarded the Young Architecture Award from the New York Institute of Architects in 2006 and the 2011 RIBA international fellowship.

Download or read book Pure Space written by Elisa Silva and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book may seem a simple accumulation of twenty-one public space projects in eight Latin American cities. On closer inspection, the presentation of project descriptions, photographs, and annotated drawings reflects a concern to analytically explain the operative aspects at work. The publication is not intended to serve only as a catalogue, guide, or manual on how to produce public space in spontaneous settlements. Rather, it goes beyond the aims of an index of best practices. It is intended, instead, as an empirical base for a critical and theoretical engagement with the problematic of development, social inclusion, public investment, (in)formal settlement, civil society and the public sphere. The publication achieves its final function at this third level, by providing a compelling argument to expand the agency of architects and urban designers and creatively find ways of justifying, financing, and building public spaces in communities —spaces that have a catalytic effectiveness in achieving significant urban and social transformation. This book was awarded by a Graham Foundation Grant and CAF Development Bank of Latin America. Book Synopsis Valparaíso School by : Rodrigo Pérez de Arce
Download or read book Valparaíso School written by Rodrigo Pérez de Arce and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The School of Architecture at the Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile, underwent a transformation in 1952 when a group of young architects led by Alberto Cruz began teaching at the school. The Valparaiso School, as it became known, acquired an international reputation for its radical stance and its commitment to dialogue between architects and other disciplines. From 1970 onwards, it began to focus much of its research and design activity on the Open City project, which had been created by a group of architects, artists and poets with a vision of a city with "no master plan, no imposed ordering devices, and no hierarchical networks of infrastructure." Originally set up as a laboratory-type environment, this alternative community has since become a place of residence and work for like-minded people. Valparaiso School: Open City Group provides an insight into this radical experiment in urban development through a series of essays and photographs."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
