Book Synopsis The Future of African Cities by : Catherine Farvacque-Vitkovi?
Download or read book The Future of African Cities written by Catherine Farvacque-Vitkovi? and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of Africa's cities has outstripped local capacities of management, absorption, and financing. Yet cities do not have to be a drain on the national economy ; on the contrary, they can add new dynamism to the process of economic growth. This book addresses two basic questions : What have we learned ? Where are we going? It takes stock of two decades of experience in urban development, proposes a common-sense priority agenda for the urban sector in the region, and suggests some operational tools to carry it out. (Adapté du résumé de l'auteur).
Book Synopsis Mega-Events and Globalization by : Richard Gruneau
Download or read book Mega-Events and Globalization written by Richard Gruneau and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the twenty first century, there has been a trend for urban "mega events" to be awarded to cities and nations in the East and Global South. Such events have been viewed as economic stimulant as well as opportunities to promote national identity, gain greater international recognition and exercise a form of 'soft power.' However, there has also been on-going controversy about the value, impact and legacy of global mega events in these cities and nations. This book provides a critical examination of the ambition for spectacle that has emerged across the East and Global South. The chapters explore the theoretical and conceptual issues associated with mega-events and new forms of globalization, from the critical political economy of mega-events in a changing world order to the contested social and economic legacies of mega-events and the widespread opposition that increasingly accompanies these events. The book also explores questions of urban development and governance, the role of new communications technologies in global economic expansion, the high security State, and the growing global influence of international non-governmental organizations. This book offers a rich collection of original theoretical contributions and global case studies from leading international scholars from the social sciences and humanities. It offers a fresh and unique interdisciplinary perspective that synthesizes cutting edge research on mega-events and urban spectacles while simultaneously contributing to a broader understanding of the dynamics of global capitalism and international political power in the early twenty first century.
Book Synopsis Situated Practices of Strategic Planning by : Louis Albrechts
Download or read book Situated Practices of Strategic Planning written by Louis Albrechts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world societies are facing a number of major problems. New developments, challenges and opportunities cause these issues and yet cases tell us that traditional spatial planning responses and tools are often insufficient to tackle these problems and challenges. Situated Practices of Strategic Planning draws together examples from across the globe – from France to Australia; from Nigeria to the United States, as it observes international comparisons of the strategic planning process. Many approaches and policies used today fail to capture the dynamics of urban/regional transformation and are more concerned with maintaining an existing social order than challenging and transforming it. Stewarded by a team of highly regarded and experienced researchers, this book gives a synthetic view of the process of change and frames future directions of development. It is unique for its combination of analysis of international case studies and reflection on critical nodes and features in strategic planning. This volume will be of interest to students who study regional planning, academics, professional planners, and policy makers.

Book Synopsis The Qualimetrics Approach by : Henri Savall
Download or read book The Qualimetrics Approach written by Henri Savall and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetus for this work emerged from Savall’s belief that there is a doubleloop interaction between social and economic factors in organizations, between behaviors and structures, and between the quality of life in organizations and their economic performance. When managers underestimate this dynamic interaction, the resulting tension ultimately manifests in lowered performance and increased costs, what he refers to as the “hidden costs” of organizational life. Only by delving into the depths of these organizational dynamics can we hope to fully understand – and create the basis for improving – organizational performance. The Qualimetrics Approach presents a different and challenging way of thinking about analyzing organizations, one that draws together quantitative information, financial analysis and qualitative insights into organizational dynamics. As Savall and Zardet argue, to gain a true understanding of what is happening in organizations, intervener-researchers must focus on all three perspectives, as ignoring any one of them will lead to incomplete understandings. Their approach underscores the importance of using qualitative data to validate quantitative depictions (“the numbers”) of organizational performance in understanding the construction of financial statements. The strength of Savall and Zardet’s approach is that it pushes us to go deeper, to fully understand the narratives underlying the numbers and the social construction of our financial assessments.
Book Synopsis Inter and Intra Government Arrangements for Productivity by : Arie Halachmi
Download or read book Inter and Intra Government Arrangements for Productivity written by Arie Halachmi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers originally presented at a 1995 conference concentrate on academic thinking about the applicability of PA concepts to administrative theory building. Emphasizing that Principal Agent (PA) theory is a powerful conceptual framework because of the economic focus on transactions between principals and agents, they discuss issues such as information asymmetry across government constituents, political/diplomatic considerations, and the narrow focus of PA problems. Attention is also given to citizen demands, internal markets, franchising, competitive procurement and "contracting in."Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Synopsis Réflexions Stratégiques Sur Haïti by : Luc Rémy
Download or read book Réflexions Stratégiques Sur Haïti written by Luc Rémy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book les Fatimides et la mer (909-1171) written by David Bramoullé and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fatimids (10th - 12th centuries C.E) are known to have been the first Shiite caliphal dynasty and to have founded Cairo, the city that became their capital in 973 when they left Tunisia for Egypt. During their reign, the Fatimids built an effective war fleet that inflicted several defeats on Christian navies. This is the first study on the Fatimid naval force and, more generally, on the role of the sea for the Fatimids whose territories touched both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The documentation presented in this study demonstrates how, in the course of two centuries, this Ismaeli dynasty set up a maritime policy and developed a communication strategy in which their control of the sea helped legitimize their universalist claims against competing powers.
Download or read book Gouverner les villes d'Afrique written by Centre d'étude d'Afrique noire (Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux) and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2007 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis L’Urbanisation diversifiée by : Madio Fall
Download or read book L’Urbanisation diversifiée written by Madio Fall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Local Governance in England and France by : Alistair Cole
Download or read book Local Governance in England and France written by Alistair Cole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local Governance in England and France addresses issues at the cutting edge of comparative politics and public policy. The book is based on extensive research and interviews, over 300 in total, with local decision makers in two pairs of cities in England and France: Lille and Leeds; Rennes and Southampton. No other Anglo-French comparative project has ever gone into such depth - based on actual case studies - making this book an invaluable resource for students and professionals alike. The book poses key questions about the changing role of the state, the difficulties of policy coordination in a fragmented institutional context, and about the relationship between governance, networks as well as political and democratic accountability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
